Happy Monday Witches!
Happy Monday Witches! Today's post features a symbol of love that you may find romantic or kind of creepy 👻
Today is the anniversary of the death of Dervorguilla of Galloway in the year 1290. She was the wife of John de Balliol and was wed to him at the age of 13 in the year 1223. When John died in 1269, she had his heart embalmed and placed in an ivory casket bound with silver. She carried it with her until her death on January 28, 1290 when she was buried beside him at New Abbey, then nicknamed, Sweetheart Abbey for Dervorguilla's devotion to her husband in life. The casket was buried with her, both finally reunited with John through Dervorguilla's death.
Was Dervorguilla's decision to keep her husband's embalmed heart beside her for the rest of her life a romantic gesture or does it show an underlying obsession with him? I'll let you decide. 😊
