Figure skating: The spins
So we've covered the jumps-let's move on to spins. This one will be a little harder since, while yes there are general groups/kinds of spins
On a more personal note...
I almost got my scratch spin down last night. Oh my god it's terrifying to spin that fast but also so fucking cool. I've been working on it for the past two months and it's the closest I've gotten to full completion, so I'm still feeling victorious.
I've got the feel for it now. I can taste it.
how to rotate faster 🌸
for all the figure skaters out there. some of these will be really obvious exercises that everyone hates, but they help. enjoy! (i have used these sOOo much when i’m working on triples)
-push ups. i hate doing push ups with a fiery passion, but you don’t just need a strong core to be able to jump well-you also need upper body strength to pull in. (try wide and diamonds too)
-tricep dips (again, gotta be able to pull in)
-off ice rotations! woo! try 1/2, then a full rotation, then multiple. make sure your elbows stay up. also make sure your arm positions correspond to the jump you’re doing (single, double, triple, quad)
-jumproping. why? speed and reaction time
-pucks! you’re gonna need your skates for this one. grab two hockey pucks that aren’t being used and put them on the ice. put your hands in the entryway (boards? i have no idea..sorry lmao) and stick ya toepick in the pucks. then do a bunch of mountain climbers on the ice. i learned this from a friend. (if up on your hands feels too easy, go down on your elbows)
-practicing back scratches really helps as well
whether you’re just a simple weeb whose starting because they wanna be katsuki yuri or an experienced skater, hope these help! just remember to persevere and i promise you’ll get there. i’m gonna be posting a lot more of these how-tos, and if you have any questions lemme know :)
(i also post a lot of skating progress vids here, and i’m trying to do these regularly if you’re interested in seeing how much of a difference these simple things can make.)
Is it weird to gif yourself? I’m just super excited to finally do a scratch spin since the first couple tries ended in a (very mild!) concussion :P
It’s super slow and my arms are off center and my hip is too turned out, but no head trauma.
Still learning how to center it properly but I'm now getting my first across!
