Jessica gives the vibe of an Autism Mom™️ who murders her child. I'm being serious. I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Bowden had similar traits to Lucas, and that's why she thought he was "too much like his father."

The fact that she's so comfortable hitting him in front of others, and responds to him saying it hurt with "Good," says a lot.

It's the way that "her" is italicized. Her. Along with "what kind of mother," and him literally calling her "evil."

I'm probably reading too much into it (as usual), but I get the feeling that Ethan had a problem with his mother beyond her not wanting to avenge Richie (though that is certainly part of it). Like... he'd been waiting for the opportunity, I can feel like it my bones.
