That accident had seriously dampened Carroll's light. Jesse had never even noticed it had light, until it was taken away. What he considered miserable and gray was nothing compared to the somber days in the wake of such a horrific thing.

And now here he was, junking the SUV. The authorities had kept it long enough to catalogue whatever evidence and pictures they needed, and the tow truck dumped it off earlier that morning. Jesse was already three hours into taking it apart with a crowbar, doing his best to ignore the obvious dark red stains splattered in several areas.

Sweat slicked down his neck; gray t-shirt showing obvious wet stains down his back. He was dirty— grease and oil on his clothes, his bare arms, his hands. Then smudged across the forehead, too, when he stopped to lift the stetson up long enough to wipe away more sweat. Decided to toss the hat aside entirely after that, to let his head of wild curls breathe in the cool air.

The rattle of the salvage yard's gate sliding open, was almost an assault to his ears. Jesse stabbed the crowbar through the space between door and window, giving it a vicious yank to force the pieces apart. "We're closed," the man barked, moodily as ever perhaps more-so than usual for reasons, not bothering to look over, because he was busy and just assumed they'd heed his warning, "that's why the fuckin' gate was shut." Christ, take a hint. Next time, he wouldn't forget the chains. Maybe should invest in a guard dog or something.
