but summer always hurts

Summary:
“Do you want to get out of here?”
The words tingled on Kieu My's tongue, in her lungs. Like her whole body had been struck with something unreal.
Fatou grinned; and her skin grew hotter.
Like staring at the sun.
“Funny,” Fatou said. “I was going to say the same exact thing.”

It's a quiet and lonely summer night for Kieu My. Then she runs into Fatou outside the building they both live in, and suddenly it's not. Or: an AU in which Fatou and Kieu My's paths don't quite cross until the summer before university.
Fic:
It was half past seven on an early summer evening, which meant it was still light and still unbearably hot outside. It was better than being inside, though. Inside was too quiet - too stagnant. Standing on the corner of the street outside her building didn’t change that Kieu My had no plans this Friday night or that everyone, even her parents, had left her alone today. But at least with the hum of the vibrant city pressing in on her and the warmth of the evening sun on her skin she could convince herself that something was happening to someone, somewhere out there.
(It was nice to pretend that thought was enough, if only for a little while.)
