SCO0243 - TextExpander 3
Filed in: Productivity
TextExpander is one of the must have Mac applications! Whilst simple in concept, once you start using TextExpander, you'll wonder have you ever lived without it.
At its core, TextExpander is an application that allows you to create and store "snippets" of information. These snippets can be plain text, formatted text, images, combinations of text and images, Applescripts even Shell script. Simply assign a few characters to create an abbreviation to your snippet, and when typed, the full snippet is expanded, saving you hours and hours of typing.
As well as standard snippets, TextExpander also allows to to access system information such as inserting the current date or time in any format you'd like, along with the ability to use the contents of your clipboard in a snippet.
New In TextExpander 3 is a new Fill-In snippet, allowing you to create snippets which prompt you with special fields to fill-in when expanded.
TextExpander 3 has been significantly updated both with enhancements to it's core functionality as well as some radical re-engineering of the application. It's now a full blown cocoa application rather than a System preferences pane option. In addition, the menu bar icon has a host of new features as well as lots of new keyboard shortcuts to both create and edit snippets.
Ever put off editing one of your snippets due to having to labouriously load up and find the snippet through System Preferences? Now, your last expanded snippet can be immediately be retrieved for editing with a simple keystroke.
Check out this week’s show for many more enhancements contained in TextExpander 3

SCO0242 - Mac Montage 13 [Members Show]
Filed in: MacMontage
Another Mac Montage this week to take some strain off your wallet!
WideMail: A great plugin to optimise the Apple Mail application for widescreen viewing. WideMail gives you the option of displaying your mail in vertical panels rather than the traditional horizontal view. In addition, you can get rid of all of your columns and have one customisable WideMail column.

Previous Recipients List: A little know option in Mail that controls autocompletion of email addresses. This segment shows you how to purge your previous recipients list and amend your default settings.
iCalShare: A useful repository of shareable calendars. Over 3,500 calendars across 40 categories for you to subscribe to.
Links: Website
PDF Support in Safari: A closer look at just one aspect of OSX's deep integration and support of Adobes PDF (Portable Document Format). This segment takes a look at how Safari handles PDFs as well as looking at a way to change the default behaviour.
Disabling Safe Sleep Mode: Want to recover some gigabytes of disk space from your laptop? This tip allows you to switch off the default "Safe Sleep" mode used my most modern Macs. Extremely useful if you have a laptop with a large amount of RAM and limited disk space (SSD users?) Once the mode is switched off, this tip also shows you how to reclaim a significant chunk of drive space.
This show also contains some corrections to last weeks BusyCal show along with some very exciting news for ScreenCastsOnline members.

SCO0241 - BusyCal [Members Show]
Filed in: Productivity
Another highly requested show this week, featuring BusyCal, the calendar application that iCal should be!
BusyCal is an application by BusyMac, developers of the very impressive BusySync product. After a couple of years work creating the hugely impressive syncing technology in BusySync, they've now decided to build on their success and create a replacement application for iCal. BusyCal is a fully featured calendar application intended to be used as a direct replacement for iCal.
iCal really hasn't had a lot done to it recently, in fact, many people thought iCal took a backwards step when the latest version was released in Leopard and Snow leopard.
BusyCal adds the functionality missing in iCal but in a seamless and very clever way. BusyCal uses the same underlying technologies that iCal does, OSX Sync Services. So all you iCal data is immediately available in BusyCal, you can even bounce between the two when you're trying it out. In addition, because BusyCal uses OSX Sync Services, synchronisation with your iPhone or other Macs is handled automatically using MobileMe.
The new UI in BusyCal is very similar to iCal so there's a very easy learning curve, an BusyCal takes advantage of some additional features including core animation, support for rich text throughout, multiple alarms, configurable snooze periods, Stick notes, journal entries and many more features.
With BusyCal also comes the ability to seamless synchronise your calendars across your LAN with other BusyCal users making it ideal for both small workgroups and families. Add in support for seamless synchronisation with Google Calendar and BusyCal really is iCal Pro!
The full show covers:
•iCal Limitations
•BusyCal Overview
•Day View
•Week View
•Month View

SCO0240 - Aperture 3 - Part 2 [Members Show]
Filed in: Photography | Aperture
Aperture 3 is the latest version of Apples flagship photo management application.
Previous versions have been aimed squarely at the professional photographer, but with this new release, Aperture has been repositioned as a tool for both prosumers and professionals. One of the reasons many people have held off moving to Aperture was the inclusion of Faces and Places in iPhoto '09. Without them, Aperture 2 was not really a compelling upgrade for iPhoto users. All has been fixed now in Aperture 3 with the inclusion of both these features and over 200+ new improvements.
Aperture 3 now gives "Pro performance with iPhoto simplicity"!
Part 2 of a mini series of Aperture 3 tutorials . Following on from looking at some of the basics in the last show, this week I take a look at some of the more advanced features of Aperture 3. In detail, the show covers:
•Adjustments & Adjustment Presets
•Brushing in Adjustments
•Lifting & Stamping Adjustments
•Faces
•Places & GPS
•Manual Location Placement
•Embedded GPS Metadata
•Using a GPS Track Log
As an experiment this week, I’m allowing non-members to purchase this single episode for a nominal charge. The Extra! membership is still the most cost effective way to receive the weekly shows, and I’m not guaranteeing to continue selling individual shows, but let’s see how it goes.
You can purchase the HD version (1280x720) with chapter markings for just £2.49 (plus VAT for UK residents) which works out roughly to $3.74 USD. The show is in full HD resolution, 36 minutes long and is downloadable as a DRM free zip file.
Once you’ve purchased the show, you’ll get an email with a link to download the show immediately, and once downloaded, it’s yours to keep. Play it on your Mac, your iPad or convert it to play on your iPhone or iPod touch.
