i made a gif out of the rejected puppies i drew for my Telegraph print ~ (i had planned to use them in a fancy border but didn't need to in the end) 

these prints are really HUGE (18 x 24) and superbly screen-printed and for sale here.

Screen Printing a 3 Color Poster

Hey dudes, I printed a 3 color poster today and decided to do a photo walk through of the process. Hope you enjoy :)

First step is completing the design. This print is based off an old Allan Grant photo from the 50's. He took some great shots back in the day and I thought it would be fun to play around with one of them and print it.

After I got the design all setup and separated in PS, I outputted the films through my Epson 4800.

So for a 3 color print, you need 3 screens. Time to coat!

This a great time to clean up, eat lunch, read about baseball playoffs, stretch, check the surf, or whatever. Once the screens are dried and ready to go, it's time to burn. It's always a good idea to grab a t-square and measure the same distance from the top of the film to a reference spot on your ruler. This will make your life much more enjoyable when setting up registration for the following colors.

Once all the screens are burned and are set to dry, it's time to set up the master sheet and get everything prepped for the 1st color. The first thing I do is get the film centered and the print area identified.

Once the master sheet is ready, I throw up the screen and get an idea of where to tape up the registration tabs ( 3 small STRAIGHT edged pieces of the flatstock you're printing). Definitely use extremely sturdy tape that won't wear down and start to fold and move after awhile. I used gaffers tape today and it worked pretty well.

I then tape down the master sheet and get the first screen all dialed with the registration marks. After I tape up the registered screen, it's time to make the first print with the registration marks included in the print.

Once the first print is made with the reg marks, tape off the marks and start cranking them out.

When you're done, you'll have a new printed master and a bunch of other sheets waiting for more colors!

For the next color, grab the printed master sheet and the film originally used to setup the first color. I forgot to take a photo of this for the second color so here's it with the 3rd. Sorry to spoil the surprise of color 2.

Line up the printed reg marks with the ones on the film, tape it down and register the next screen. Pretty much you're making a registration mark sandwich. Once it's all setup, lay down the first print with the registration marks on top of the old, tape em' off and start printing the second color.

Repeat the process from above and before you know it, you'll have a finished print in your hands. Thanks for reading and don't hesitate to shoot me an email with any questions. Happy printing!
