Hm, just kind of a repost to check out how videos are displayed with this post option. Wasn't sure how much text and stuff I could write.
Seems alright. Description can be found in my last post: http://sibaku.tumblr.com/post/80116819957/screenspace-refraction
Screenspace refraction
Here is a basic implementation of a real-time refraction effect in a deferred shading environment [VIDEO]
Just as a very brief summary on how it's done for an object:
1. Render the background as usual to a texture
2. Render refraction object backfaces and save its depth.
3. Render object frontfaces with the scene's depth buffer. Calculate an approximation of the distance through the object by comparing backface- to frontface-depth values.
4. Calculate refraction direction of the view direction according to the object's index of refraction on the surface using the normal.
5. Lookup background pixel located at the current pixel's position with an offset computed as a fraction of the refraction vector projected onto the view plane
6. Attenuate the refracted color with a function of the distance and blend it with the object's color
Maybe I can elaborate on some things in the future :)
