I'm going to be building a workbench, so I've been 'screw shopping.' I need some explanation on the sizing of screws when they are advertised as (example) 6 x 3/4". I know that 3/4" is the length of the screw, but what does the 6 mean?

What if they changed clothes sizes so they weren't numbers any more--the numbers don't mean anything, and they vary depending on where you shop jesus fucking christ.
So I mean it would be completely legit if they just changed it so sizes were adjectives (but only positive ones) and then when you were shopping people wouldn't have to be as self conscious about what size they were.
Getting clothes that are a size 14, 16, 18 and above would have less of a stigma about it and also like size 6, because people can be self conscious about their size whether they're stick thin, or are bigger. Why make shopping so traumatic and annoying when it could be a lot nicer? Like at the moment I can get clothes that are as 'small' as a size 12 and as 'big' as a size 18 because everywhere varies in what they class as the size. Men's clothing, on the other hand, seems to be extra small, small, medium, large, extra large, in pretty much every shop (UK) so like why can't ladies just have size fabulous, size beautiful, size gorgeous ect.
