the other musicals we did in middle school: once upon a mattress and grease

have not seen once upon a mattress

have not seen grease, either, actually but have heard bits of “summer nights” and “worse things i could do” and probably others

i did read a les mis fusion with grease once, though, which was pretty great but it didn’t follow the plot because sandy-equivalent got together with rizzo-equivalent rather than the main lead 

(it was honestly great and if grease was about that i would have watched it already)

also non-stop and the battle of yorktown, for similar reasons. they’re about Revolution!! 

this isn’t even a top three anymore but wait for it  and the room where it happens because BURR REALLY DOES GET SO MANY GREAT SONGS room where it happens especially it’s GREAT

les mis is much easier

DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING. the song itself, because best rally song but ALSO ESPECIALLY THE FINALE. listen, the finale makes les mis. it’s the only bit of the musical that consistently makes me cry, it’s so powerful and so incredible and every time i listen to it i think about some new aspect of it. it’s a call to action, it’s very evocative of what I love the most of the book and COME ON “DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING, SAY DO YOU HEAR THE DISTANT DRUMS? IT IS THE FUTURE THAT THEY BRING WHEN TOMORROW COMES”

okay one day more because it’s the example of When A Musical Does That Thing and ok kyle scatcliffe (a Good) mentions it best in the context of enjolras specifically (link) (okay i watched it again and honestly i love him so much). but HONESTLY that moment of joining and the whole original staging of it and enjolras’ entrance is the best thing ever

runners-up: i saw him once (why. was. it. cut), valjean’s soliloquy (!!!!!!!) “he told me that i have a soul how does he know” when it’s done well valjean honestly sounds BROKEN in that scene and it kills me so much, AT THE END OF THE DAY HOLY SHIT I LOVE AT THE END OF THE DAY IT’S PROBABLY TIED WITH DRINK WITH ME, red and black, and DEFINITELY LOOK DOWN.
