It's a long shot (because it would mean a really bad bit of wiring) but if you can borrow a circuit tester, try running it around the bedroom ceiling, especially in the center, with the switch flipped either way. There's a chance that there's a live box under the drywall. If so, you could carefully open up a hole and install a fixture. Plus, having a buried live circuit is actually dangerous. Good chance that either a fixture was planned but never installed.
Yeah, I doubt it’s a live circuit but probably it’s there for an overhead that wasn’t installed. Which is weird, but these older places, you know, sometimes the renovation just gets strange.

hmmm... I wonder.... Could you knock out the wall between the 'not-a-closet' in the anti-chamber, and the awkward column? It would create flow from the hall into the main room.. and open the book nook for shelving alternatives.
I think that one might be load-bearing. Which is okay, since I do need that closet space as a closet, at least for now. It’s an interesting challenge, whatever else it may be!

Congrats on the new house. What's the sq footage? Just curious because my one bedroom flat looks really small next to the Speakeasy...
It’s about 950 square feet -- larger than the place I’m in now, though there are some odd nooks that can’t easily be utilized. Still, for what I paid for it, it’s a little slice of heaven :)

I think you should turn your coat closet into a proper entry-way nook: bench w/storage underneath for your shoes. Hooks on the wall for coat/bags/etc, and a shelf above for baskets w/winter gear & stuff. Ya know, because why not add /more/ projects to the list ;)
Oh, I like that idea though! The other alternatives I’d come up with were either buying some Elfa fixtures and putting up a new coat bar and maybe a shoe rack, or building a little table and turning it into a sort of artsy shrine on entry. But I like the idea of putting in a bench and some hooks for coats. Pretty sure I have a rug that will fit it exactly too.

I like the idea that there's some wiring confusion and one of your neighbours will be endlessly frustrated by their lights going on and off apparently at random...
LOL yeah, the people directly above me are like “Maybe we need a new lamp, this one keeps flickering....”

Why is it called the Speakeasy?
@ameliahcrowley suggested it, saying that the framed bit of red at the entryway looked like the place you would knock to give the secret password to enter the speakeasy. Plus it’s got plenty of nooks where a false wall could hide the booze :D
Number six from the latest ask meme?
6. Do you have a favorite snack while writing?
I probably snack too much, it's a problem. Usually it's something salty.
And then when I've written enough and deserve a treat, it's Kinder Bueno
(Power JUST came back again and the first thing I did was plug in my phone and rush to microwave pizza because I can’t trust this to stay on long enough to preheat the oven)
I’m still hopeful that we can do Christmas. They say by 7am Sunday things should be better. Our current temp is 13F and the windchill is a balmy -10F (-23C). We’re seeing all of this snow because the lake wasn’t frozen (was actually pretty warm) and this is all the lake effect from the wind picking it all up and just dropping it on land.
I’m supposed to make butter tarts tomorrow and I admit I’m going to be angry if I can’t.

🌻 How often do you read your own fics?
Depending on the fic, every once in a while. Sometimes I'll just go on a reading spree, because you know what they say about your own fics being the only fics absolutely made for you... I don't get to the long ones a lot, not the whole way through anyway.
😎 What fics do you prefer on a scale of canon compliant to wildly original?
I like a good what if - "what if Matthew were drafted to the Oilers", "what if soulmates were real" (NaNo should be fun), but yeah, I usually end up adding some really AU elements. I like straying from being canon compliant, especially for longer fics, but for short things I like taking "canon" as a starting point and getting my queer hands all over it.
🎬 If a movie or show were based on your fic, which fic would you choose and who would you fancast?
Okay, but most of my fic could never be made into a movie or show because there's way too much smut, let's be real. WPIM would have to be a whole ass series for sure, it's that long. That and a lot of the internal monologues wouldn't translate well...
That and I'd be mortified because these are real people. I like my fourth wall firmly in place, thanks.
I feel like if he was a girl I might go for Mopsy. I was just thinking maybe Teddy?
A lot of fans of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson in the chat today!
I’d pull out so many pages the whole book would get thin and feel weird.
