another weird childhood anecdote this one for scripturespice
when we lived in salt lake, my mom seemed to feel excluded from social life in our neighborhood, wherever it was. she maintains that this was on purpose, and that the local group of moms cut her out from things, like they wouldn't talk to her if she brought me to the park to play, because we weren't mormon. i for one take this with a grain of salt; my mom is frequently occupied with who is/isn't talking to her and seems to have a big chip on her shoulder re: persecution. i'm sure she didn't fit in, at least. i was weird as shit and she was alone most of the time since dad was out flying. that and we moved around a bunch, so we never got to know many people.
anyway we used to drive past temple square at night and she'd turn to me in the car and say "look. that's disneyland. but... the mormons won't let us go"
