SD38s for Dessert
We’d finished our meal at the Tamaqua Station Restaurant. I’d been watching the signals for a southward train and saw that the previously all red lights had cleared to ‘approach’ (yellow-over-red-over-red). Kris ordered a fancy dessert from the dessert cart, and then we heard the whistle . . . the second in less than an hour. I wandered down toward the old tower just in time to catch a pair of…
hello tumblr, I come with trains.
on tuesday as a part of an already ongoing camping trip over at lassen national park, we decided to drive up to Mt Shasta, and along the way we made a stop to visit the McCloud Railway, or what's left of it anyway.
the SD38s have pretty much been in the same spot since 2016, the yellow S-12 (30) has been moved into the engine shop, what they intend on doing with it I don't know, but the current plan going forward is to use the 38 (the brown one) when the railroad opens back up for car storage (whenever they feel like doing that.)
OH YEAH ALSO
when I said that the SD38s has been in the same spot since 2016 I was referring to the October 2016 attempt to move all three of the SD38s out from mccloud to the UP interchange in shasta city but because the 36 and the 38 were pretty much just dead weight at the time (not to mention how terrible the track condition was) so they just left the 36 and 38 there and took the 37 to the interchange.
anyways UP picked that fucker up and the original intent for that was to take it to klamath falls to get sent back south to roseville but in macdoel the drawbar fell out so they left it in dorris and then it ended up going to roseville anyway to get it fixed
it operated on the dakota southern railway for a bit, but then it suffered an electrical failure in 2018 and it just sat in chamberlain until 2021 when it got transferred to the st maries river railway (where it's still doing nothing)
bro has had one hell of an adventure, that's for sure.
