Eastern Utah

Here we see a westbound auto train along the Denver & Rio Grande Western. The location is about eight miles east of Thompson Springs, just off BLM Road 168, near Bootlegger Wash. It appears that all the power is Southern Pacific tunnel motors: the lead unit an SD40T-2 (snoot) and the rest SD45T-2s.

I believe this is the summer of 1996, and so the combined SP/D&RGW is about to be folded into the Union Pacific (in September). Two images by Richard Koenig; cropped from medium format negatives (Kodak Plus-X film).
