Scooby doo on zombie island
Here, we have Shaggy’s PTSD being triggered and Scooby comforting him.
Then, though Shaggy tried to reality-check is anxiety, his fears were unfortunately confirmed. This is part of why recovery is so difficult. And demonstrates how microaggressions cause trauma.
Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. #2 by Sholly Fisch
Fred compares his friendship to Chuck to the bond between shaggy and Scooby. Then Fred says he and chuck were a team.
This follows, that shaggy and Scooby are a team. Service dog and handler pairs are referred to as a team.
Proof!
Be cool Scooby doo. Episode two.
What’s new Scooby doo, season two, episode 13, New Mexico old monster
The gang is climbing up the side of a mountain. Shaggy quickly needs food. Fred planned ahead and packed sandwiches. Then, later on in the climb, shaggy fell asleep and counted on the gang to get him up the mountain.
Doing physical activity while disabled can be tricky. With enough planning, enough support from the people you’re with, you can adapt your adventure so that you can participate.
A pup named Scooby doo, season two, the return of commander cool
Shaggy spends the whole episode thinking that he’s really Commander Cool. Velma’s uncle, a doctor, tells the gang that it’s best for them to just go along with it.
1) good job preteen kids in supporting a friend who’s brain is being weird! 2) “just go along with” their reality is good advice for a lot of different scenarios. People with Alzheimer’s, for one example. 3) shaggys brain is escaping into a familiar world of controlled risk. Whether he’s dissociating or something else, his service pup and his friends do a good job keeping shaggy out of any real danger.
Guess who Scooby doo, the one with Wonder Woman
When Scooby goes with Wonder Woman in her invisible plane thing, shaggy misses Scooby. He tells Velma that he needs a snack but can’t do it alone. He says he thinks he has never snacked without Scooby. Velma takes pity and eats shaggys sandwich concoction - candy and bologna.
This is another example of being shaggys true best friend. But more importantly, it demonstrates what it’s like for a handler to go throughout their care routine separated from their service dog.
Sometimes, it feels like you can’t do it alone. And you need your friends to help.
Scooby Doo Service Dog
Scooby Doo, Where Are You?
Episode: Mine Your Own Business
Shaggy has Scooby open doors for him. Many service dogs can open/close doors. Scooby Doo is a service dog. Shaggy couldn’t do it all on his own. He needed his helper.

Legend of the Phatasour is my favorite Scooby Doo movie, for several reasons.
But that’s not the purpose of this post.
In the movie, Velma recounts a typical evening that ended up making Shaggy’s extreme fear response cause him to scream for three hours straight without taking a breath. The recap of the mystery that caused Shaggy’s breakdown ended with Shaggy locking himself in a wardrobe, screaming. Throughout the rest of the movie, when Shaggy started to get scared, he’d freeze with a strange expression on his face, quiver, whimper, and hide.
This clearly demonstrates that Shaggy has PTSD. On a “typical evening” he was suddenly triggered and could not break free from a deep sense of absolute terror. Shaggy’s hiding in the wardrobe could be reflective of the behavior that saved him during his trauma experience - hiding from the life threatening entity. Then, after a major flashback, many other triggers caused Shaggy to dissociate and revert back to the coping mechanism that made him feel safe.
