Productions Begins on Mary Seacole Biopic starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw

Producer Billy Peterson has chosen “Seacole,” as his first feature film for his new production company, Racing Green Pictures.

Seacole will center on Mary Seacole, a pioneering Jamaican nurse who cared for wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War and found herself at odds with Florence Nightingale. 

Period film mainstay Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Belle”, "Free State of Jones") will be playing the British-Jamaican business woman and nurse who worked behind the lines during the Crimean War.

As Rupert reveals at the end of this Horrible Histories premiere interview the film he’s been working on recently in Romania is Seacole, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, based on the life of pioneering Jamaican nurse Mary Seacole who was a contemporary/rival of Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw Joins 'Seacole' for Racing Green Pictures

The film will star Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Belle”) and Sam Worthington (“Avatar”). It centers on a Mary Seacole, a pioneering Jamaican nurse who cared for wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War and found herself at odds with Florence Nightingale. Seacole’s self-sacrifice on the front lines and fierce, adversarial relationship with Florence Nightingale during the war made her famous in her time.

Mary Ploom-Jane Seacole was born Mary Jane Grant in Kingston, Jamaica, the daughter of James Grant, a Scottish Lieutenant in the British Army, and a free Jamaican woman. Her mother, nicknamed “The Doctress”, was a healer who used traditional Caribbean and African herbal remedies and ran Blundell Hall, considered one of the best hotels in all of Kingston. [x]
