Artist feature: Sean Johnson

Sean graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Houston with a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies and recently completed her Masters in Literacy.  She enjoys performing spoken word and has starred in several local plays.  Her poetry has appeared in The Chaos, Riversongs, Houston Poetry Anthology, The Louisiana Review, Sanskrit ,Third Wednesday, American Journal of Poetry, and other anthologies.  Though she has always been a writer, her serious interest in visual arts began in 2016.  Since that time she has been a featured live painter, exhibition artist, and vendor at Block Market, Black Girl Excellence, Survivor Seminar, Midtown Arts Center, and a host of other events.  Her paintings have been published in The Hunger Magazine, Homology Lit, and Boston Accent Lit.

She shares with LFF poems and paintings including “Instructions for Opening a Heart,” “Africa,” and “To be with you is” for Les Femmes Folles Poet and Artist Collaboration series.

Africa

Somewhere East of Eden in an era that has now faded into the recesses. In that space where Pishon amputates the ground and everything we have not eaten grows unencumbered I am Mother. 

To sons and daughters, created in turbulent oceans, born breeched. Delivered with skin and words fully developed, umbilical cords knotted around their necks in defiance of the breaths I will forever give to them. I am Mother. 

Children of four seasons, I made you of the elements and carried you until you could stand on your own. Now you are upright, trampling across the very back that bore you. Devouring the one who had already given you the fruit of her womb. 

Children of four corners, I crafted you from wind and now wear you like a cyclone, struggling to understand why you tear me open without regard.

Yet I cannot turn away. 

The proverbs say, a mother must always be ready to let go of her children. But with closed and opened eyes, I see you in my night and daytime dreams. 

I cannot walk away. Even when you write “Non Applicable” and draw a line across my name, I am mother.

Instructions for Opening a Heart

make sure it is the heart you want to open and your hands are clean free from the leftover clots and shredded ventricles of the last heart you exposed 

prepare your tools and your table you’ll need at least one precision instrument preferably the sharpest words you can find offer it some lidocaine or at least a stick to bite down on when you slice into its valves 

massage it with your warmth to decrease the rapidity of its beat whisper calm and reassuring words such as “I’ve done this procedure hundreds of time and have never lost my patience” assure its family that this heart will see them soon 

touch its veins gently before rolling it back back beyond the curtain into the harsh spotlights start the IV drip and tell it to count back from 100 to the many ways it has loved you 

when its sleep is deep and silent saw open the alabaster box that protects it from sacrifice pick up your scalpel tongue and dive right in

To be with you is

is like being a finger that travels every inch of a man’s wonderland strokes miles of passion in hopes it will discover a hand it can hold onto only to find itself disavowed from his palm and its lifelines 

it’s like being an outstretched arm touching cold sheets in the morning and feeling imprints of a heart that only leaves a trace searching for fossils in over stuffed pillows and bedspreads where a body left its watermark but not enough color or contrast to caption the picture 

to be with you is to be a leg tossing and turning searching for a warm place to rest its inner thigh pressing its calf into outlines of forever wrapping itself around remnants and falling asleep in beautiful desolation

Les Femmes Folles is a volunteer organization founded in 2011 with the mission to support and promote women in all forms, styles and levels of art from around the world with the online journal, print annuals, exhibitions and events; originally inspired by artist Wanda Ewing and her curated exhibit by the name Les Femmes Folles (Wild Women). LFF was created and is curated by Sally Deskins.  LFF Booksis a micro-feminist press that publishes 1-2 books per year by the creators of Les Femmes Folles including the award-winning Intimates & Fools (Laura Madeline Wiseman, 2014) , The Hunger of the Cheeky Sisters: Ten Tales (Laura Madeline Wiseman/Lauren Rinaldi, 2015 and Mes Predices (catalog of art/writing by Marie Peter Toltz, 2017).Other titles include Les Femmes Folles: The Women 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 available on blurb.com, including art, poetry and interview excerpts from women artists. A portion of the proceeds from LFF books and products benefit the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s Wanda Ewing Scholarship Fund.
