damian and tim have such a unique relationship in the sense that even tho the passing of robin between them was just as messy as all the other robin mantle passes- their issues dont truly stem from that
like, yeah, its not smooth and tim isnt happy about it, but thats not /really/ why they beef so hard in the early days. its definitely used as the reason, and absolutely plays its part- but its not the major factor here
though it doesnt really help that none of the bats actually know how to talk about their feelings.
a lot of damitim for me hinges on how difficult the early days of their relationship are
so when damian first moves to the manor, his thoughts on tim are this big mess of jealousy and fear of inadequacy, because even though he talks a big game of being "the rightful heir" he knows that being bruce's blood doesnt actually mean shit in the role of robin. not a single one of his predecessors were bound to bruce by anything more than the fact that they chose to be there, and to a kid who was raised to believe that blood is everything- thats fucking terrifying.
and its more than a little confusing for him. he was raised to believe all of these grand things about himself and his "destiny"- his place in the world. so actually going to the manor and seeing how things work with bruce and realizing its nothing like what he thought- it's a lot for him to process
and i think those underlying fears of not truly understanding his place in the bats and clearly seeing how tim fits in is such a bruise to his ego- because to have this predecessor thats clearly valued for how clever he is and how good he is at being a vigilante- its a big shadow to fill, made even bigger by the fact that he doesnt think he should have had to live up to anyone else to begin with since he's bruces kid
but with none of the rest of the bats placing that importance on blood- he's stuck floundering and clinging to that because what else is he going to cling to?
and tim feels like he was pushed out of the robin role before he was ready, yeah, but his beef with damian stems from the fact that they simply Do Not understand each other actually. and for someone like tim? who's entire personality and life choices are built upon the foundation of his compassion for others and his relationships with others- having this kid thrown into his life who is having to be taught a new kind of compassion for people and is kicking and screaming about it the whole time- there's just such a divide between their personalities
but thats where the fun is!!! that they dont really /get/ each other in the beginning and they fight because they clearly see the talent and skills and hardwork the other is putting into things, but neither of them could EVER acknowledge that about each other
and as they grow up and start to understand each other better and the fighting is /mostly/ for show a lot of the time because they could still never admit they've grown to care for each other over the years
i just!!! i love the shadow of their beginnings hanging over their heads for years to come!! but it doesnt overshadow that underlying mutual respect because you cant watch each other do what theyve done and not recognize the abilities it takes- them both just hanging on to the "well just because i recognize that doesnt mean i /like/ the guy"
and theyre thinking that to themselves and they mean just a general friendliness kind of like, but i love love love when damian kind of trips headfirst into this crush of tim and goes back and forth with the "ew, drake of all people??" and then "well, at least he has /some/ nice attributes" meanwhile after damian has grown up and grown into himself, tim realizes he has also fallen ass backwards into a crush on damian because "oh my god he grew up hot??" and he's not that same little kid that was thrust onto them way back when and tim can also rationalize it to himself as how much damian has grown up personality-wise too
anyway this, like all the other shipping ask questions i got lmao, got way longer than i anticipated
i just think for damitim its really important to recognize how mixed up they were about each other in the beginning! and not when its flattened out to have damian actually believe hes better than tim?? cause thats not true- like he wouldnt have been So Pushy about how much better he was than tim if he didnt have a complex about it lmao, but i love that!!! make them never actually talk about that and then fall ass backwards into "hate sex" when theyre older just for them to be like "wait but i dont actually hate you. like you frustrate the shit outta me but i deeply trust and respect you" its fun!!!

Imperial gold isn’t unheard of at Camp Halfblood; Kon still has an Imperial Gold sword from Camp Jupiter, and has confessed to Tim on more than one occasion that he likes getting to awe new campers by flashing around the only golden sword at camp. But Kon’s blade was the only one that Tim knew of in the whole camp.
“Damian…” Tim can tell Dick is unsure about taking the blade, “Where did you get this? You two didn’t both steal-”
“No!” Tim and Damian deny, nearly in unison. Though Tim’s denial is a lie, he /is/ curious as to if Damian’s is or not.
“It was a gift. From my mother.” Damian holds his head up high, and, okay, Tim can buy that.
sorry that the new snippet makes references that you kind of need to know the source material to get 😂 but i will give a brief rundown for those not familiar
camp half-blood is the camp for greek demigods, and where i've based the start of this au, whereas camp jupiter is the camp for roman demigods
the greek kids use weapons made out of "celestial bronze" which only hits the mythical, ie. monsters, gods, demigods, etc, but not mortals. the romans weapons work the same way, but are instead made of "imperial gold". its /mostly/ just an aesthetic difference, tho i know of at least one monster that can only be pierced by imperial gold
and as far as kon's situation goes, he's actually a roman demigod, but due to situations and shenanigans, has permanently taken up residence in the greek camp, hence why he has an imperial gold weapon

martha asks kon to also come back to help jon and tim ends up coming to visit pretty consistently
the idea is that kon is pan but not officially out, tim is out and with bernard at the start of the fic, and jon takes tim being around as a way to confide in him about being bi as well
i want it to be messy jontim and timkon, with tim going through a breakup with bernard somewhere in there and getting closer and closer with jon all the while kon is like "seriously??? im right here??" lmao
kon would be torn, happy that tim has someone to talk to about it all but confused as to why that someone is jon. while kon thinks hes obviously queer and didnt need to "come out," tim treads lightly around the subject with kon because he remembers feeling like he was into guys when he was younger but just kind of pushing it down cause he had other things to worry about and he doesnt wanna push kon into a space where hes not comfortable in that regard
so tim and jon end up getting together while kon is dealing with his jealousy and mixed feelings about the whole situation
i havent decided endgame yet, whether it be jontim or timkon or jontimkon (while i think kon would be fine with the poly and incest of that trio, i dont think jon would be as chill with it 😂)
but idk, it did seem more like the kind of thing that i would make some sort of rambling story her eon tumblr with it rather than a real fic, but we'll see what happens
