Happy birthday to one of my favorite people, the incomparable, the legend, Billie Holiday! My best homey, Jamal introduced her music to me when we were in 7th grade. I remember being totally enthralled by her…listened to her every day. She was my introduction to my love for jazz! She has always been painted as a tragic figure, but she was more than her pain and the substances that she used to drown the turmoil out. She was a beauty! She was a bonafide musician….the woman’s phrasing….her ability to infuse every song with every God-given human emotion made her brilliant! I heard that she had the biggest heart, would give you her coat off of her back. She would also be ready to cut you if you ever decided to cross her! She loved hard even when she was hardly loved back. It has been my obligation to help Billie reclaim her truth. I celebrate the greatness of this woman! She was a Warrior Woman and she should be honored as such! Thank you, Lady! Happy Birthday, Billie!
