There be some tiny ass shells in this world
If I were to make these and sell them, would people be interested? All the shells would be from my local beach (there are a lot of more beautifully-colored shells I've found, but this one was just my test shell), and if I get enough interest, I'll make more than just the style necklace pictured.
*DIY seashell hair accessories*
happy almost long weekend, everyone! i haven't done a good DIY in a long time, but this one i really sank my teeth into the past few weeks :) a seashell crown & other hair accessories!
i'll tell you the story of how it all started. my friend was throwing a party & it came about she had a "secret" alias...DJ whyte klam (don't even ask, hahaha)! next thing i knew, this group of friends started coming up with their own "sea-themed" names. i named myself lil' ursula, hahaha! you might have seen some of the shenanigans on my instagram :) to "come high or stay home" (my life's mantra), i even made a crown of shells for the party & thus, my continued obsession with mermaids & seashells & all things the sea...uhhhh continued, hahaha!
i didn't take pictures of the actual DIY process, but it's pretty easy. for the crown, any plastic tiara from the craft store will do. the hard plastic didn't make a great surface for the shells to stick to, so i wove glittery pipe cleaner through the tiara for a better surface between the hot glue & shells. then with a hot glue gun & many hours (if you're OCD like me) meticulously placing the shells, plus beads & pearls from broken jewelry, for a pleasing design, voilà, i was queen of the sea! i had so many shells left over that after the party, i then made a smaller headband type crown & a barrette! i can't wait to wear these for the rest of the summer. at least it gives my other sea creature hair accessories a break, hahaha!
if you want to give this DIY a try this labor day weekend, here is the list of supplies i used & where to get them :) tag me on instagram if you make one...i'd love to see what you come up with!
DIY seashell hair accessories
- bag of seashells (my local michaels craft store, only $3.50 per bag)
- plastic tiara (party city, $1.99)
- headband (CVS $1.00)
- barrette (dollar store)
- hot glue gun, glue sticks & pipe cleaner (michaels or CVS)
- pearls & beads (raided broken stash of my jewelry case)
I’ve been going through my seashells, again. Most of them have had a good soak in bleach, now. (I’ve been way behind on it.) I’ve found a handful that I want to make charms and pendants out of. (I’m going to try and get a few pictures up later.) I’ve thought of some designs for two of the larger pieces, but there’s one that I’d like to incorporate polymer clay into. The shape and color just makes me think of pottery, especially the broken pottery you see with succulent arrangements. So, eventually, I’d like to make some miniature succulents out of clay and attach them to the shell.
Other than that, I have a ton of shells to craft with. I especially like my sand dollar collection. I have more broken ones than whole ones, but there’s still a great deal of beauty and character to those pieces. My favorites of those, though, are the exposed inner walls of the sand dollar. There’s just something about that porous surface. I love having them for reference pieces, but I think they’d be fun to incorporate into dioramas in the future.
Tiny Abalones on a Mini Frame
I spent a wonderful afternoon creating a miniature seashell frame with tiny seashells. I kept to cool colors, trying to create an active ocean scene. I included many dyed seashells, as well as some of my favorite natural ones.

Ornaments in the Summer
I'm still enjoying making seashell ornaments! They are festive, bite size sailors valentines. The small size encourages intricacy and allows me to explore colors and designs that I would not want to gamble on in a larger piece. Some turn out to be better gambles than others ;-) Here are a pair in simple white with delicate details.
Beautiful Seashell Crafts
If you are one of those crafty people who like to collect seashells and make decorative objects, you will surely enjoy this topic and find great inspirations within the following photos. The easiest ideas use large seashells, which you fill with a small amount of wax and a short piece of yarn in each, to make decorative candles when the wax hardens. You can also make scented candles and apply the…
