Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan announced on Monday that the city is working to 'peacefully' dismantle the Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP). The self-declared autonomous zone was set up by protesters on June 8 after Seattle police abandoned the department’s East Precinct. 

For the past two weeks, the self-proclaimed 'police-free zone' has reportedly maintained a carnivalesque atmosphere, with free food, community gardens, speeches, and a host of other activities. 

However, the decision to dismantle the CHOP comes after two shootings near the zone over the weekend that killed one person and injured at least one other. Seattle's police chief also stated on Monday that the department has received reports of sexual assault and other crimes in the zone, too. [WP]
