#tbt (on Friday? Yes!) Joan Sutherland portrays the Hindu priestess from the exotic namesake opera by Léo Delibes. *The pic suggest she's singing the famous "Bell Song". Seattle, 1967. · My huge thanks to Andero for supplying the pic 🌹🌹🌹 · A review from the opening night: "Most coloratura sopranos have voices that give the impression of being rather brittle; like delicate silver reeds that might splinter in the gale of a high E. Not Miss Sutherland. Her voice is like a pliant golden cord: full, rich, beautiful throughout her extraordinary range. The vocal instrument is something to gasp over and so is the artistry with which she uses it. This was apparent throughout the performance last night, but it was never more obvious than in her first act duet. Miss Sutherland's obvious intent was to blend and balance her voice with Miss Tourangeau's in order to serve the music and not her own ego." Wayne Johnson, Seattle Times, 11 April 1967 · A little story about Melba/Delibes/Lakmé: "Melba became one of the composer's favourite interpreters. She studied with Delibes who was so impressed with her that he did not share the concern of the directors of the Monnai in Brussels about her execrable French: 'It's all the same to me whether she sings in French, German, English or Chinese, as long as she sings!' ". We conclude he may not have been disturbed by Sutherland's French, which according to Bonynge - she spoken with a Marseillaise accent. · #Review #ClassicalMusic #Opera #OperaSinger #OperaHouse #InstaOpera #OperaLover #Concert #Recital #BelCanto #Baroque #Stage #Costume #Composer #LeoDelibes #Lakme #SeattleOpera #Portrait #Dramatic #Coloratura #Soprano #Dame #JoanSutherland #LaStupenda #Diva #PrimaDonna #Legend #1960s https://www.instagram.com/p/CFkqCtaB8c5/?igshid=16zdfne980h7h
