Interesting news for fans of the sports film, on which I'll present a few thoughts in the next week or so. The sporting contest can often unfold as a dramatic narrative, as all good sports writers know, and the highs and lows of a sporting career are ideal material for film. No doubt the makers of this film will be hoping to repeat the magic of Chariots of Fire. The potential is there - Coe versus Ovett: the two great talents of their era, the contrasting personalities, the natural stage of the Olympics (I imagine Moscow will be the focus, rather than LA, though of course Coe won gold at both). There will no doubt be a temptation to cast Coe as a dashing young hero with Ovett as the prickly antagonist. The narrative will need contrast and tension off the track as well as on it. But in truth the two had much in common, products of British state schools that still had the potential to foster athletic talent but even more so of intense, controlling parents. It will be interesting to see how it all translates to the screen. I suppose Radcliffe is a passable enough likeness!
