While frog iconography can be found in many cultures around the world, the Southwest Culture Area is one of the few I've found where tadpoles also regularly appear. I'll be featuring these two pieces in my presentation on frog iconography in the Pacific NW & American SW at SECAC2023 next week!

SECAC 2016 Juried Exhibition Thursday, September 1, 2016 – Saturday, October 22, 2016 *Gallery Walk-through: Sunday, September 18, 2016 3:00-4:00PM *Public Opening Reception: Sunday, September 18, 2016, 4:00-5:00PM The Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC) 2016 Juried Exhibition is presented in conjunction with the 73rd Annual SECAC meeting to be held in Roanoke, VA (10/19/16 – 10/22/16), hosted by the City of Roanoke, Virginia Tech, and Hollins University. Fifty-eight large and small-scale works by forty-one contemporary artists will be presented, and include video, mixed media, paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture, prints, and more, created by artists and educators working in the Southeastern region and across the United States. Admission to the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum, including events and programs, is always free and open to the public.

Feminism & Curatorial Strategy: Feminist art research has been investigating art history theory and recorded significant women and other marginalized artists since the 1970s. Feminist activists continue to recognize the underrepresentation of artists who are women and minorities in collections, art sales and exhibitions in museums and gallery representation nationwide. As the statistics continue to wane for women and minorities in the arts, feminism is re-emerging as a key critical strategy in art practice, theory and curating. This discussion seeks to address how institutions small and large choose to or resist integrating feminism into their curatorial/exhibition strategies directly through mission statements and collection plans, or less overtly through organization, display and interpretation. This panel calls on scholars working across historical, modern and contemporary art exhibition curatorial strategies who are informed by a feminist perspective. We are looking to identify ways curators are using feminism to inform their methodology whether in the installation, promotion, and/or didactics of exhibitions in large institutions and smaller galleries; and how this is developing feminist and art history discourse in the twenty-first century.
