Taut, dense and sprawling at 17 tracks spanning 75 minutes, the expanded version of the Parson Red Heads’ third album has the heft and momentum of a page-turning coming-of-age novel. First released as an 11-song LP in 2011, Yearling is a remarkably accomplished work from a little-known twentysomething quartet from Eugene, Oregon, whosemembers layer full-bodied multi-part harmonies over shimmering folk-rock guitar riffs, animating hooky, contemplative songs that consistently go somewhere. The band’s prime movers are songwriter/bandleader Evan Way and his wife Brette, whose muscular drumming serves as the band’s motor. The Rickenbacker-powered “Hazy Dream” and the epic ballad “Time Is Running Out” are but two of the LP’s several instant classics.
