The Hotknives - “Dick Barton”
Ska Giants
Song released in 1988. Compilation released in 1997.
Second Wave Ska / Two-Tone
The Hotknives are a second wave ska / two tone band from Sussex, England who formed in 1982 and still exist today. “Dick Barton” never got a studio release but instead was a staple of their live shows. I’m unsure of when or where this version of the song was recorded, but the first version that was released appeared on their 1988 live album Live At The Boatman, recorded at The Boatman in London. The difference between that recording and the one that I’m writing about is the horns. They’re nonexistent in the initial recording, but play an integral part in this one, accompanying the leading keyboard melody. The song is in reference to British TV and radio character Dick Barton.
Largely instrumental, this song is fast, probably used to bridge from slower material to faster material to get the crowd hyped up and dancing. With a swift, skanking bass rhythm, shakers, and drums, the Hotknives alternate between two keyboard melodies, reimagining a new theme song for Dick Barton. The first melody has the horn section playing along with the keyboard, while the second melody, which has a bit of a surfy-western flair, has the guitar playing in unison with the keyboard.
Fun live second wave ska track from the late 80s.
