I need some cheering up. Definitely going today to some second-hand shops & flea markets to get some cheap books. It’s my self-care routine for shitty mood.
Things I found in second-hand items I bought over the years:
Tickets for a wildlife reserve in the breast pocket of a jacket;
Old cybershot selfies of strangers inside an otherwise empty photo album;
The most beautiful bookmark from the Art Institute of Chicago of Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks” forgotten in a book;
Essay questions from 1997 amongst the pages of a short story collection;
A card from a Greek restaurant that no longer exists in the inner pocket of a book bag;
And many, many book dedications – some a little dull, with nothing more than random names next to all-too-common lines, but others carrying a story of their own, as special as the novel I’m about to read.

Not Charity, but a Chance.

I bought a nice second-hand trench coat, but then...
I noticed one button was a bit loose. Maybe 30 seconds into re-sewing it I noticed the button right next to it was loose. And the next one… well damn. I re-sewed all six buttons.
I asked Mr Katajainen how it looked like. I quote verbatim: “Nobody wears coats like that. Well… except maybe Jehovah’s Witnesses.” So, now I have an Official Jehovah’s Witness Trench Coat to keep company to my Official Gestapo Leather Coat (long, black, historically inaccurate).
I realized I have no hat that matches the coat.
These aside, I’m now a proud new owner of a very stylish black trench coat made by a now-defunct local manufacturer in the 1960s/70s – at the quite absurd price of 2 euros.

10 Things You Should Buy Second-Hand
Over the years, thrift shopping has become a way of life for me! Most everything I buy is second-hand. Once I started buying second-hand, I couldn’t bring myself to buy things at retail prices. When it comes to clothing, I buy everything second-hand except panties, bras, and socks. I also shop thrift for household items. For me, it’s about saving money but it’s also about the excitement of a…
