DE QUEESTE VAN DE SCHILDERENDE FOTOGRAAF

Het is een avonturenroman, meer dan dat het een reisgids is. Margriet van Weenen voert de bezoeker van Afslag BLV langs bergpaden en zandwegen. Over rotspartijen en hooggebergte. In gemanipuleerde beelden is zij op zoek naar een geheime berg. Aan de hand van foto’s door haar langs ’s Heeren wegen gemaakt, aangevuld met vintage fotografie – dus verstofte zwartwit plaatjes die ze verzamelde van uiteenlopende landschappen. Het is een denkbeeldige wandeling geworden, eigenlijk meer de fictieve beklimming van een zinsbegoocheling, die zonder wegwijzer of padvinder in deze ruimte te gaan is.

De kijker naar het werk van Van Weenen merkt de sensatie die de kunstenaar in het landschap gevoeld moet hebben. En bleek die ervaring in de foto er niet duimendik bovenop te liggen, heeft Margriet het inzicht meer duidelijk gemaakt door er schilderachtige elementen aan toe te voegen. Met gebruik van verbeeldingsmiddelen als de fotografie, het schilderen, collagetechniek en keramiek maakt zij het landschap tot een eigen omgeving, zonder de kijker ermee te bedriegen. Want het is haar nooit gereisde reis naar een gedroomde plek. Zonder woorden en zonder kaarten, zonder aanknopingspunt en zonder navigatie, vind ik in de tentoonstelling makkelijk de weg naar die fantasie.

In de printen rijst de aarde brullend op uit de wereld, of is het gestold braaksel van eeuwen her. Vooral laat Margriet van Weenen ongerepte gebieden zien. Bergtoppen die nooit beklommen zijn. Niet ontdekte plekken op nauwelijks begaanbare hoogten. In haar verbeelding kan het landschap van overal zijn, in mijn voorstelling vind ik ze nergens op de wereldkaart. Zo gezien is het een abstracte omgeving van overal en nergens. In het verbeelde verhaal zijn de zinnen eenvoudig te lezen, de regels makkelijk te volgen, de woorden spreken boekdelen. Zonder dat Margriet lijfelijk aanwezig is stuurt ze mij een van tevoren bepaalde richting in. De wandeling leidt naar haar fantasie, mijn voorstellingsvermogen.

Met haar project Secret Mountain onderzoekt Van Weenen het menselijk verlangen naar schoonheid in en van de natuur, de behoefte die ervaring vast te leggen en bij zich te houden. Die beleving legt ze vast in de foto’s, en verzamelt stenen als souvenir van en herinnering aan die bewuste plek daar en toen. Maar die bekende plaats ginder en destijds laat ze niet ongemoeid. Zoals beschreven plaatst ze het gekende beeld in een anders lijkende omgeving door het te bewerken. Digitaal in de computer of analoog met verf aan een kwast. Het is een gekunstelde samenstelling van een voor het oog verborgen plek. Alleen te ontdekken door in de fantasie te graven. Een geheim dat schuil gaat in de verbeelding. Een sfeer boven de waarheid. Wat zich in mijn netvlies brandt wanneer ik de ogen sluit. Dan hoor ik het water stromen, de wind ruisen in de bomen, en snuif de geur van de natuur op. Het is een virtuele gewaarwording. Het is er niet tussen de muren en langs de wanden, maar toch beleef ik de queeste van Margriet. Een zoektocht als levenstaak. Het doel van haar kunstenaarschap. De reden van deze tentoonstelling.

I’ve had a longstanding fascination with Secret Mountain or, more specifically, with the mystery surrounding their musical existence. I’ve known Alex for a handful of years now, admiring her wit and delightfully deadpan existence over beers and bands screaming out our radio station’s speakers, but it took me nearly three years to finally hear the music she created. At long last the stars aligned, and after crawling down the parkway we arrived in New Brunswick, pulled out a phone, and captured a few moments with Alex and Heeyoon before they took us on our first journey to secret mountain, conveniently located in the basement beneath us.

#WCW: Giving you Boosegumps

It was only recently I stumbled across the track Stole Your Bike on a very rainy day in an infinite Soundcloud chain search. I immediately felt a little warm and fuzzy inside as I listened to the soft, sweet sounds of Boosegumps, as she sung over gentle acoustic guitar and her keyboard. It was so welcoming to hear a girl just singing about day-dreaming, in a kind of stream of consciousness way, conjuring up that tender feeling of nostalgia. It was this very beckoning to pause and take a moment to reflect that made me fall in love with all things Boosegumps.

And so began a whirlwind romance.

Boosegumps is fronted by the lovely New Jersey based Heeyoon Won, part time member of Secret Mountain, her first music project which began in sophmore year at college with her friend Alex. She tells us: 'I didn’t really get into a lot of the music I’m into now until I started going to college. College is where I met a lot of people who made their own music and performed at local venues/houses. They inspired me to start making my own music'. It seems fitting that Boosegumps came in to being during such a landmark time, as integral to Boosegumps sound is this very experience of growing up.

Following the release of the beautiful☺in April, Boosegumps' most recent release B-Sides with It Takes Time Records is a much more scattered collection of lo-fi recordings, made both during and after her earlier album release. Recorded on her Casio keyboard in her bedroom, B-Sides sounds experimental and fun, as she plays with buttons and different functions to discover new beats. Through the use of toy instruments, played by her friend Andrew, Heeyoon creates a sense of endearing childishness, which she describes as representing 'Kid Heeyoon'; it very literally sounds like she's playing with a child. This kind of resonating sensation of duality in growing up, a desire to experience adulthood and the feelings that come with it combined with a desire to be young and careless, is beautiful encapsulated in the lines of B-Sides’ opening track Daydreaming and Feelings: ' Sometimes life is no big deal...I'm usually in my head, but I'd rather be in bed'.

Beyond the handcrafted sound of bedroom production, there is a certain kind of intimacy and personal revelation in the music of Boosegumps, achieved only in the safe, comfortable space created by bedroom walls. For Heeyoon, the making of music is very much a private and reflective experience, a time to get lost in her own thoughts and memories. She describes the process as 'kind of like writing in my diary', a way to process experiences and express feelings in a very personal way. It's with this kind of immediacy, a scribbling diary entry getting it all out, that she shares her music on the very public domain of the Internet. While Heeyoon loves sharing her music on physical mediums, the Internet provides a very unique open platform for people to discover and interact with her music and with it, Boosegumps' music has been ever spreading through the blogosphere.

Heeyoon tells us: 'I feel like we’re being exposed to a lot more female/non-binary artists, every day, especially because of girl powered blogs, such as you guys, sharing them with the world'. With a noticeable disparity between the amount of girls and guys producing this kind of music, it's refreshing to hear Boosegump's comfortably expressing herself through her work. Through B-Sides, we gain a kind of charming insight in to a female artist’s bedroom as nothing more than a space to be creative and have fun. For Heeyoon, ‘it’s so inspiring to see girls killing it- creating art, playing shows, making albums, taking selfies, etc. I feel like we make art for ourselves, but also to encourage other girls to do the same. I mean, it’s still hard to be taken seriously as a non-male artist but the journey seems a lot less lonely, now'.
