Finding some interesting things about the three part soul and the godself in an old book interpreting Huna lore that Max Freedom Long wrote.

It seems that someone helpfully underlined everything I should be paying attention to. I really love collecting used books. Annotations are so helpful and have such a psychic imprint in them, usually they help me absorb the book faster.

EPA Updates Plans to Limit Use of Science in Decision-Making

The EPA used the cover of Super Tuesday to put out an update to its plans to limit scientific research in its decision-making.

Trump’s EPA, as you may recall, in 2018 announced its plan to disallow reliance on scientific studies in which any of the underlying data is not available to the public. This is a problem, because “participants in long-term health studies typically agree to take part only if their personal health information won’t be made public.” In an already anti-science administration, this new rule is “one of the government's most far-reaching restrictions on science.” The EPA’s immediate goal is to stop paying attention to pesky things like the definitive study linking air pollution to premature deaths, so it can justify getting rid of even more environmental regulations.

The EPA’s proposal received more than 600,000 comments during the public comment period. Most were opposed to the new rule, “critical of the agency for penning policy that would block consideration of some landmark public health research.” So the EPA has modified its proposal in two ways:

The EPA will now give less consideration to scientific studies in which any of the data (such as sensitive medical data) is not made public, rather than giving them no consideration at all.

In exchange, the EPA greatly expanded the scope of the rule, giving it (in the EPA’s words) “a broader applicability.” It now covers an even wider variety of scientific research; additionally, where the original proposal would have applied only when the EPA considered new regulations, it will now apply to all agency activities involving “scientific information” that it considers “influential.”

“The proposal seems to be in lockstep with the administration’s systematic efforts to dismantle environmental regulations and to finalize the rollbacks before this year’s election. The effort to dilute scientific-research is particularly beneficial to the fossil fuel industry, which is often hampered by studies about the climate crisis, air pollution or the safety of drinking water.”
