Hello! I've created a few illustration that were submitted to A Secret 7" project, that takes 7 tracks from 7 of the best-known musicians around and presses each one 100 times to 7” vinyl. They then invite creatives from around the world to interpret the tracks in their own style for every 7”. You don’t know who created the sleeve, or even which song it’s for, until you have parted with your cash - the secret lies within. Oh, and the profits go to a mental health charity ☀️ I absolutely loved the concept, so I've brought a few simple concepts I had into sleeve designs. Secret 7″

Secret 7", 2020 

Whilst researching for our Music Cover Imagery project at college I came across this intriguing project, now in it 7th and final year, called Secret 7″. 7 tracks have been selected, 100 copies of each have been pressed onto 7″ vinyl's. Every single one of the 700 newly created vinyl's has had a unique artwork created for it. The covers have been designed by graphic designers, photographers, illustrators, graffiti artists and sculptors as well as individuals whose designs were selected through an open submission.

The 700 artworks are currently on show in an exhibition at NOW Gallery in London as well as all being available to view on the Secret 7″ website. On 1st November all the artworks will be sold individually via auction with all proceeds going to chosen charity, Help Refugees.

The seven tracks in this years project are:

The ‘secret’ of the ‘Secret 7″ name refers to the fact that all the artworks are anonymous. Not only is the name of the artist of the cover art secret, so too is the musical artist. Effectively if you’re looking to bid on a particular record you have a 1 in 7 chance based entirely on whether your guess at identifying it by the cover art is correct.

As well as being displayed in NOW Gallery there are numerous posters and billboards across London with the featuring the cover art designs. Sadly viewing the artwork in real life in London is not an option this year but the online gallery is compelling and I could easily spend a good few hours trying to guess the tracks based on the cover art, some appear to be relatively straightforward, others I’m completely flummoxed!

Here’s my guesses for 7 covers, do you agree? There’s always 693 others to choose from...

Brief 5 ideas development

These two ideas are the two I chose from a wide range of the sketches and want to use them to make the final choice.

First of all, the first spirit comes from the classical paintings of the Pietmondrienne and the stave. I used a lot of geometric images as the main elements. It was like the notes are beating like a building block to convey the rhythm of the song and vividness. Let cd's cover become more modern style. I chose blue, red, and yellow. These three basic colors also represent the three band members. The most basic starts but created more possibilities.

The second idea is to use a line to paint a picture. The dynamic and vividness of the song can be demonstrated by the different thicknesses and colors of the hand-drawn lines. It is also modern.

Manic Street Preachers - No Surface All Feeling

I really like the lyrics of these two paragraphs. The overall rhythm and tune of the song are relatively fast. There are many heavy metal sounds and slow shakes in the middle of the music, but the whole is a rhythmic one.

It was released on 20 May 1996, through Epic Records, and was the first record released by the band following the disappearance of lyricist and rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards. 

This song is also told the story about the Manic Street Preachers. The lovely story about these three men.

This is the most confusing piece of art I’ve ever created but that’s the point; if I can’t involve the artist or song title, I kind of used the concept of the sand in the piece and I used the Jamaican flag colours in the beach ball but those are the only references I’m including.
