SecSum: Off colors (Steven Universe)
Well, it's not exactly what I used to draw, I had to push myself out of comfort zone... And I'm not glad how it looks after all, but I know for sure I couldn't do better for now.
With this piece I tried to recreate this look of gems' painting on walls, like a mural. Because in all that situation in "Off colors" it almost felt like some weird destiny.
Isn't it ironic that among all people Steven had stuck to Lars, who had disliked him the most, and eventually Lars, because of his cowardness, hadn't left that ship with other humans and then they managed to escape together and Lars, in order to save everyone, had become victim. And if he didn't die, Steven wouldn't be able to return home... It's a very long chain of coincidences. But I was interested in one particular event.
I'm sure a lot of you remember how Lars left Sady in the moment of danger. And a couple episodes after he goes in fight almost without hesitation. Is that even the same person? He wishes to help some strangers, but bailed on Sady. That seems kinda like a big scratch, doesn't it?
So, the question is - why? What happened? What changed in Lars?
Well, the whole episode was dedicated to fear. To Lars' fier in particular. I don't like how crewniverse executed Lars' change of attitude (I'll talk about it more in the video), but I understand where it was coming from. He told Steven he was afraid his entire life. Why? Because he always felt like an outsider, like a loser, like someone who can't find his place. He was afraid of anything new, anything strange. He thought he couldn't handle it and he will fail anything he will touch.
And then... he met them. Off colors gems. Wrong. Failed. Who felt like outsiders too. But the difference between them was in circumstances. Gems were afraid of everything because they are fighting for their lives. Their failure was punishable by death.
And I think eventually Lars realized that he didn't have anything to fear in his life. His fears were nothing compare to this off colors gems. (Special thanks to Rutile twins, they were the most relatable for Lars.)
And that's what pushed him to the limit, pushed beyond the fear. Pushed so far that he was... reborn. And it happened before Steven reanimated him.
I wanted to make this piece look like prediction, but made by Crystal Gems.
Now I left with last episode of Wanted, next picture will be much more interesting I promise ;D
