SECTION FOUR: SWOT ANALYSIS (2.4)
SECTION FOUR: WORK BREAK DONW STRUCTURE & GANTT CHART (1.4)
When starting this project I used a range of different tools & management tips to assist me along the way and ensure that I stayed on track through. I started with a Gantt chart using (ganttology.com), although I found the gantt chart a bit confusing to follow so I changed it to a Kanban chart which is similar to a Trello board which I’ve used in the past.
This allowed me to have a clear view of what needed to be completely in the time available. As i’m a visual learner this was a great way for me to keep on top of this project. Along with this I create a vey broad work breakdown structure that would assist me when creating the “Gantt” chart, it broke it down into big section so that I could scope what other details may need to be slotted in.
I found it easier and less cluttered to make sections based on the checklist and slot my personal timelines within those. For example, Below section 7 suggests that I do certain tasks, but within that i’ve added my own personal goals and deadlines.
I tried using different colours for each section to separate them, I found doing this really helpful in the long term.
Overall the Kanban chart was a great tool to monitor the progress of my project whilst allowing me to identify any pitfalls within my timeline.

SWOT Analysis
Strengths
My skill set:
Previous experience with Adobe packages (Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, Premier Pro )
I’m a fast learner so InDesign should be easy to pick up
Past graphic design experience at A level
I will purchase the programmes on my personal laptop as I need them for other projects, so easy access to all software (£15 per month)
The client:
Good communication with client, easy to get hold of
No extra costs as the uni pay for printing costs
Enthusiastic about the project, so should be easy to work with
Weaknesses
My skill set:
Very little support with content and design decisions, will have to be self reliant
No previous experience designing magazines
The client:
No templates to work from to keep style consistent
New to their role, so will have many other roles and responsibilites
No direct contact with printers, problems will be resolved through union contact
Gantt Chart
This is a photograph of my Gantt chart that has been planned to end at the very beginning of February to allow time for testing and amendments.
I created it on Project Libre which is a software package that you download onto your laptop and it allows you to make the Gantt charts. The software is fairly simple to use, however I found that you have to be really careful and observant as you go through inputting each bit of information because sometimes the dates had a tendency to get messed up and it was just a case of deleting that specific section by highlighting it and pressing delete and then re-writing the section again.
Risk Assessment
For this project I made a risk assessment form which helps me assess all the dangers and risks that could arise in the course of this project. This assessment allows me to weigh up all the risks so I am able to plan counter measures to lower the risks from happening and affecting the project. I have assessed the risks by the probability it will happen and how severe the effect it will have on the project if the risk arises.
Along side the risk I have put procedures that will help reduce the risk to the project.
I have colour coded the risks, green implies there is a low risk to the project, yellow means there is a medium risk to the project and there is a probability that the risk will arise and finally red which means that the risk will have severe effects on the project.
