Jack Munsch Project

The Project

Initially I had two prospective clients for this project. The first was Jane Lowe, who wanted a website alongside a magazine to showcase her work and recipes. The second was the client that I decided to choose, Jack Munsch, who wanted to design and develop a new logo, a brand new website showcasing his videos and show reel, and business cards for promotion. I chose Jack Munsch as my client because I have a passion for videography and photography so my skills and knowledge can be used to produce a more professional artefact for the client. I have also briefly worked with Jack before so I knew I could rely on him not dropping out of the project and keeping good communication with me. At the start of project I created a contract of agreement, which we both signed, stating that I would create a set of artefacts for the client; a website with a personalised domain, a new logo design and fifty business cards.

Processes of the Project

At the start of the project it was decided that the theme for the project would be simplistic, but sophisticated, this had to be consistent throughout all of the artefacts. This was to ensure that all the artefacts are consistent with each other and provides a professional image that the client was looking for.

Consistency of the project was very important for me, as I believe that it will tie all the artefacts together and make them look very professional. Also, when potential clients look at the logo, use the website and see the business cards they will be able to see the consistency throughout the project and realise that it means a lot to my client. As a result of this the first artefact I started working on was the logo; I started with this because this would be the main focal point of the business cards and the header of the website.

Before I started work on any of the artefacts I wanted to make sure I was comfortable with the software I was using, such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I felt like I needed to improve my skills with these resources as I had been away from University for two years due to personal reasons. I dedicated a few days to learning tutorials and watching YouTube videos, this quickly allowed me to familiarise myself with the tools of Illustrator and Photoshop. I believe this was an important part of the project for me because I was able to design and develop a truly unique logo for my client from the tutorials I had learnt from the Internet.

Once I was happy with the logo, I started creating the business cards and website. For these two artefacts I used Moo.com to create the business cards and WiX.com to develop the website. I decided to use WiX to develop the website as I was very unfamiliar on how to create and develop websites, I wanted to seek advice from my peers to help me decide what platform I should use to make the website, and they suggested to use WiX. I also asked for advice on business card companies, as I was aware that it could be time consuming because of the delivery of the cards, so I wanted to guarantee I chose a reliable company for this artefact.

There were many professional designs to choose from on Moo.com and I considered some designs for the business cards. However I decided to create a blank business card and design it myself. This enabled me to keep the consistent feel of the project. I downloaded templates of business cards and then used Illustrator to design over the templates. With the tools provided by these two platforms I was able to meet my client’s needs to create a successful and professional website. The client was very thrilled with the finished look of the business cards as they looked very professional and met his needs, he was also very happy with the website.

The communication between the client and I has been great, this has also contributed to the success of the project. As I had worked briefly with the client before, I was confident that he would be a reliable client and not drop out. Furthermore because of the relationship I had with the client he was able to talk to me openly about the project through the emails I sent to him about the progress of the project. We tried to call each other on the phone as often as possible to discuss things about the project, this worked very well for the project as my client could call me when he had a query, or he wanted to change something. This was crucial for the success of the project, as my client was able to tell me truthfully if he did, or did not, like any aspects of the artefacts. This in turn enabled me to make quick alterations to the artefacts to meet the new needs of the client so he was happy for me to continue with the project.

Merits and Problems of the Project

Throughout this project I did not encounter any major problems that affected the overall project, and if I were to encounter any major problems I had already taken into account contingency time for me to find a solution to the problem and for the project to stay on track for the completion date. However I did encounter a few minor problems in the course of this project.

One of the first problems the client and I encountered was the type of font we wanted to use for all of the artefacts; the client stated he wanted a simple typeface that looked professional. I researched several different types from dafont.com, however when it came to applying these fonts to Adobe Illustrator they were distorted. As a result of this we had to quickly decide on a solution, we both discussed about choosing another font from dafont.com conversely the client did not want to risk the problem again so he said to look for a similar font within Adobe Illustrator. Choosing the font from Adobe Illustrator was the best course of action for the project as I was then able to successfully use the font for the website to keep the consistent theming.

Another problem I encountered was at the start of the project one of the clients’ needs was to incorporate a social feed box on the website. After researching on how to do this on the WiX website I found that you are unable to easily incorporate this feature onto the website, unless you are highly skilled in HTML coding, which unfortunately I am not. However when discussing this with the client he was happy not to have the feature on the website.

What Changes Would You Make & Future Improvements

At the start of the project it was discussed in my initial proposal that I would use a web developer to help me with the production of the website, I had encountered many issues trying to find someone to collaborate with. Many web designers were too busy to take the project on, and some were not interested, so I decided to develop the website by myself as I was wasting time trying to find someone to collaborate with. If I were to do this project again, with more time involved, I would try to collaborate with a web developer as I believe I would be able to learn a lot from them and enhance my HTML coding skills.

The one part of the website that frustrates me the most is the white blank space on some of the pages, if I had more time with this project I would try and rectify this by changing the display settings or adding images to fill up the blank spaces.

In the final meeting my client and I discussed the future of the project, I asked the client if I could still maintain and look after the site as I found this project very enjoyable, he said he was more than happy for me to maintain the website after the completion of the project. The client also wants to start showcasing filming tutorials and tips for students at University to help with their projects.

I am very happy with the final outcome of all three of the artefacts created which meet the needs of my client. The website with a personalised domain name, a brand new logo and fifty business cards have been developed very successfully and managed well. The client also added that he is more than happy with the outcome of the artefacts and that he would recommend me to other people. He also added that he will credit me on the website and the business cards when people ask about it, as it will be a big part of his career from now on.

On reflection of this project, I believe that it has been a success. I did not have too many problems throughout the process of the project, however I have gained a lot of experience and tips, which will help me with future projects. The project has highlighted to me the importance of project management, and workflow management. I have learnt that when a project is managed correctly with the correct tools like Gantt charts, to help track the progress, it is possible to successfully execute a project.

Final Completion

The day has come, my client and I met each other yesterday to complete the signing of the End of Project documentation. This concludes my time on this project, however I will still be continuing to work with the client to make the website better.

Signing Off the Project

As all of the artefacts have been produced, tested and modified. They are all ready to go live, below is a copy of the End of Project Sign Off that will be completed by the client and I. This states that the rights of all the artefacts will be passed onto the Client. The signing of this document will confirm the end of the project. The signed form will be included in the final documentation hand in.

Does the Artefact meet the needs of the client and user?

Initial Project Proposal;

Project Proposal

Client: Jack Munsch (A Monsters Ville/FAZE ONE Media) Brief Description: Jack is a music video producer & director who works for a company called FAZE ONE Media who produce short videos to promote smaller companies and up and coming artists. Assessed Artefact: Website, business card, logo, and social feeds. Financial: Cost for website ranges from free to £10 a month, and business cards can vary from £10 to £30 depending on quality. Client Specification: A functional website that shows and plays videos, a working gallery which showcases clients photography work. A simple yet sophisticated design to the website and the business cards. Software/Hardware: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects, Dreamweaver and Moo.com Copyright Issues: There should not be any copyright infringement however I will consistently check throughout the project to make sure there is no infringement. Possible Risks: There is a risk with Computers and Software, they tend to crash when used too much, I will make sure that I create regular backups of the clients work to prevent this risk. There also could be problems with the business cards, not printing properly. Skills: Photoshop/Illustrator to design the website and logo for the client. Time Scale: December 2014 – March 2015

The client and I have agreed that the artefacts produced in this project have met the requirements stated in the start of the project, even though one artefact of the initial proposal was removed, the client is very happy with all the other artefacts. The only other differences that are not on the initial proposal are the types of software and hardware that were and were not used. For the website development Dreamweaver was not used however www.Wix.com was used instead to create the website. As the videos were also already fully edited by the client, no further work had to be carried out, so Adobe After Effects was not used throughout the process of this project.

There are also no copy right issues with the project, Jack has the copyright for his videos and images, and once the end of project sign off has been signed the website will be Jack’s and he will be responsible for the copyright of the website.

The time scale of the project has also met the needs of the client, with plenty of time in between to make sufficient changes to the website, logo and business card, ready for the completion date. Below shows the fourth and final version of the Gantt chart;

Furthermore, at the end of the project sign off, the client will be handed the rights to the website, logo and business cards. I have also written up a manual for the client to help him with the basics of the website and how to make changes onto it. A copy of the hand over manual will be provided in the documentation hand in, with the Gantt charts.

Any Errors or Admissions and Correcting Faults

From the results I was able to gather from the usability questionnaire I constructed a list of changes I wanted to make on the website. The changes I wanted to make were: • Make Navigation bar bigger, and bring it lower • Attach links on the Contacts page • Change the logo on the home page • Try and fix the logo on the phone based website • Remove headings on web pages

I sent the list of these changes to the client to keep him updated with the progress of the testing and final modifications stage, however I received an email back from him saying that he was happy for me to make all the changes, but he would prefer if the headings of the pages were kept. He has said this as he feels like it reassures users that they are on the page they want to be. After this email I started working on the changes.

I made changes to the navigation bar first, I just made the size of the text bigger and then dragged the whole bare down a little bit so it was just a little bit further away from the logo at the top of the page.

The next set of changes I started to make was on the Contacts page, feedback from my questionnaires had found that the text that includes the clients social feeds, for example his email, Twitter and Instagram, were not linked to their appropriate site, and she thought that would be a good touch on the website. I feel like this is a very good point as it allows users to quickly access the clients’ social pages. This was a simple fix, I just highlighted the relevant text and linked it to the appropriate social page.

Following the changes on the Contact page I started to edit the logo on the home page, for this I removed the text over the logo, JACK MUNSCH and replaced the faded logo with a brand new logo that was not faded, I think this gives the website a better look and it doesn’t have too many JACK MUNSCH’s on the home page.

As the client was not too worried about the phone based website I did not pay too much attention to it, however I did have a quick look at it to see if I could resolve the problem. Unfortunately I could not rectify the problem so I just deleted the image of the logo. I did this so that when users entered the mobile based website they would not be welcomed by a distorted imaged of the logo.

After all of these changes, the website is ready to go live once the end of project sign off has been completed.

Usability Testing

Now that the website has been fully developed, I have conducted a usability testing questionnaire, that would ask users to thoroughly test the website and answer questions based on the website. This will allow users to test out the site and see if there are any problems with the website before it goes live. Below is a blank usability testing questionnaire;

I have asked my client, Jack Munsch and several other people to fill out the questionnaire. The questionnaire asks users what type of computer, and/or mobile device and browser they are using, this is to ensure that the website works on all different platforms and internet browsers. The results from the questionnaires are below;

I also asked some of the testers to test the contact form. This should send an email to my client once the form is submitted, including all the information the user has put in the form.

I showed the testers a copy of the business card, they went over the design and context to see if there were any spelling mistakes or any problems with the print. They all reported that there were no spelling errors and no printing errors either.

Check Your Assumptions Made Earlier Are Still Valid

My initial assumptions that were made for this project with my client were to create a, website, business card, a logo and social feeds on the website. All of these assumptions are still valid apart from the socials feeds on the website which was decided by the client not to be included. At the beginning of the project there was a possibility of collaborating with a web designer who would use Adobe Dreamweaver to develop the website. Unfortunately no web designers would take on the project as they were too busy doing other work and projects, therefore at this point I decided to take the project website into my own hands and start developing it by myself using the tools provided by the internet. Furthermore to this, as a result of using WiX, the platform was able to provide a mobile phone based website as well, even though this was not part of the clients specifications we had discussed if he would like this feature, he mentioned that he didn't really mind the mobile based website, if i could make it work then that would be a bonus, otherwise he's happy with the desktop based website

I have not had many issues with the project and all the tasks have been on time with the exception of a few tasks where I had been working on other projects, however because I allowed contingency time within my Gantt charts I was able to afford to miss out on a few days of the project and it to still be on time. My fourth and final version of the project Gantt chart will be provided in the final section of the project.

The assumption that the project would start in December and end in March is also accurate, the paperwork and initial scope of the project started in December however the actual development of the website and artefacts did not commence until the start of the year, in January 2015.

I have used a table to compare the budget assumption made at the beginning stages of the project. The only different assumption for the budget report is that I did not take into account the fee for using WiX, but this has been included in the new budget report;

With this budget report, it shows that the project was £10.60 under budget, it was agreed between the client and I that I would cover the expenses of the project as a gesture of good will. I will use the money to buy myself a few drinks at the end of the project, alcoholic drinks.

Ensure the Project is Running to Plan

The start of this project was on the 12/12/2014, and with this Gantt chart it is predicted that the artefact will go live on the 19/03/2015. On the Gantt chart I have ensured that I have given the bigger tasks, for example the implementation section, longer amount of time this is because I have allowed contingency time for these parts of the project. I have done this because these stages of the project are likely to have errors and risks that could delay the time of the project, with the contingency time I am able to use a few extra days in case anything bad happens to the project. The expected end date on the Gantt chart is the 19/03/2015, I expect the website to be fully completed by this time however the project may not be signed off until the weekend as the client is only free then, he will be emailing me the exact date he is free soon.

Workflow management and project management has been to the success of this project running on time. Due to the nature of the project I would be handling many types of media for the client, to ensure I had several copies of this I used my memory stick, external hard drive and computer to back up all of the clients work and information. To make it easier for myself to manage the project I organised my files appropriately so I could easily access them when I needed them for the website.

Review the Project with Client

My client and I had organised a face to face meeting, unfortunately due to my clients’ busy schedule he had to cancel the face to face interview and we had a quick conversation on the telephone, below is a transcript of the conversation;

Jack: Hi Hiten, I’m sorry I couldn’t meet with you today I’ve just been very busy at the moment with filming and stuff. I just wanted to ask you about the progress of the website and the overall project, I know from the emails you’ve made a lot of progress so just want to hear from you. Hiten: Hi Jack, that is no problem I can understand you being very busy, we will try and rearrange to meet up before the project end, I will email you some dates. Well furthermore to the email, I have now completed the design of the logo and used that logo on the business cards which also have been produced, they are with me for the time being. The website production side of the project is coming along very nicely, I will be able to send you another version of the project planner which shows the updated dates and timings, so you are able to go through that as well. But yes, the website is getting along very well, all the features are on their now, I have now also added the context you have provided me too, very witty if I do say so haha. I will soon be starting with the process of testing the website, however there actually is one thing I encountered, in the initial scope we discussed to have social feeds on the website that would show what you have been tweeting and posting on your social feed accounts, however I have found it very difficult to implement this onto the website. I am still trying to work on a fix for it but I just wanted to make you aware! Jack: Ah okay that’s amazing, yeah I love the logo and business cards I am very happy with them so good job on that! I’ll be honest with you Hiten, I’ve been thinking about the social feeds, I’m not too sure if I do want it on the website, I just feel like it might clutter the website up and I also post random tweets and links which will not be related to my work so I don’t want that linked with the website, but I do was social feed links, if that makes sense? Like links that will take people to my twitter, insta pages ect. Hiten: Oh okay that’s fine, If you do not want it in the website that is fine, have a think over it and let me know by email for sure if you do want it or not, and yes there is social feed links to you Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr pages so users will be able to access them through the Contact page. But other than that please have a look at the website and let me know if you would like anything else changed ect, I will also email you a testing questionnaire, if you can fill that in and send it back to me that will be great. I don’t want to keep you too long so I’ll let you go now, I know you’re a busy man. Ill email you all the important bits of this convo so you don’t forget either! Jack: Awesome Hiten that sounds great, yeah just send it over to my email and ill do the rest buddy! Hiten: Okay cool, enjoy the rest of your day bud! Cya Jack: Cheers mate, cya later!

Following on from this information I emailed the client the third Gantt chart, this will also be provided in the next section. The conversation also highlighted a change in the needs of the client, in the initial proposal the client wanted social feeds that would display, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr.

I have been communicating with my client mainly with email as we both have access to mobile devices with email access, we have also been calling each other when we need to discuss things about the project. Due to my client living in Surrey, and I am currently living in Portsmouth it has been difficult to organise face to face meetings, however when I got back home I try to meet up with the client just to go through the project and have a coffee as he likes coffees!

We have also been using Facebook Messenger a lot to communicate with each other. Facebook Messenger is a great way to communicate with my client as I am able to send images and videos instantly to the client and he can quickly view the media and I am able to get his opinion very quickly!

Creating the Artefact

The logo has been completed earlier than schedule, this allowed me to have more time to design the business card and website around the logo, and if the client wanted to make changes to the logo he had enough time to inform me so I could make the changes. Fortunately the client was very happy with the look and feel of the logo and said that it represents his image very well.

The design and order of the business cards have been completed and they have also been delivered to myself, I will keep hold of the business cards until the final sign off of the project where they will be handed over to the client. I have emailed the client pictures of the finished business cards and he is over the moon with the finish of the cards.

The final step of the website development was attaching the website onto the correct domain, www.JackMunsch.co.uk. I used 123Reg.co.uk to buy the domain which cost £5.99 for the year, which is also within the budget. With WiX it gave me step by step instructions on how to apply the domain name to the website, however I encountered a few problems with this process. The name server WiX provided me did not work when I tried to apply the settings on 123Reg.co.uk, however when analysing the help columns I noticed that some users said not to include the IP Address when inserting the name server. I went back onto the control panel of the domain name and tried again without the IP Address and it worked, it notified me that it could take up to 72hours for the domain name to attach to the website.

I checked the domain instantly after and found that the website had been linked with the domain name, meaning the website is live on the address;

Website Production Phase

For the production of the website I used www.Wix.com, which is a development platform that allows users to create and design websites. Initially I researched the different themes and layout the website had to offer, I looked for a theme that is in line with the needs of the client, a simplistic but sophisticated design. Below are screenshots of some of the themes that I had found that would match the clients’ needs. To ensure I chose the correct theme I did extensive testing on the layouts, I did this by using the Try feature provided by WiX that allows uses to try out a website before they use it. This allowed me to test the different functionality of the different websites.

After discussing the designs with the client on the phone, I decided to go with the Small Brand design. We both agreed that it met the specifications we discussed throughout the project as it has the black and white theming that the client wanted, as well as a simple yet sophisticated layout and design.

I gathered the clients’ images from his Flickr, Facebook and Instagram pages, and saved them onto my computer and memory stick. This ensured that I had the media in several place in case anything happened to my computer or memory stick. I was easily able to download the images off Flickr and Facebook, I also made sure I downloaded the highest quality images so they look professional on the website. I encountered a few problems gathering images from the clients’ Instagram account as you are unable to save the images onto the computer but only view them. I emailed the client to notify him about this problem and he suggested to take the Instagram images off his Facebook page. I had already checked these images however I found they had lost quality from the transfer but the client was adamant he wanted some of his Instagram pictures on the gallery.

Once I had all the images ready, I imported them onto the WiX website platform. The website builder allows users easy access to options to create objects for their website, for example videos, galleries and much more. I used these tools to create a gallery, it gave me many different options to choose from. To make sure I used the best gallery for the client I went through the options that would work best for the website and client. I found two options I liked, Grid and Animated Grid, I applied both grids onto the page to see which would work best. I felt the animated grid was too small and left too much space around the edges and at the bottom of the page, whereas with the normal grid it filled up the whole page and had big sized thumbnails to give users and insight to what the image is which I really liked, because of this I chose to go with the normal Grid. Once I had selected this it was simple to import the pictures onto the grid and the edit them.

I went through all the webpages and started editing the context that would appear on the respective web pages. I also edited the navigation bar, I was able to choose from several different of styles for the navigation bar and how it would react to when being used. I wanted a professional look to the navigation bar and heading of the website as this will be consistent all over the website, so I did not want it over complicated and cluttered. When editing the navigation bar, WiX allows users to customise the bar as they wish, I was able to change the background, border, drop down background, text, font size, colours and much more. This allowed me to customise the navigation bar to my client’s needs. I was also able to rearrange where I wanted the links to be setup in the navigation bar, I made sure that the links matched the designs I showed the client in our initial meetings as he said he wanted them in that order which is, Home, About, Videos, Gallery and Contact. From this I also made sure that all the pages where linked to the correct locations.

I then imported the logo of Jack Munsch onto the website, I wanted the logo to appear on each page, and therefore I imported it onto the header of each page so users will see his logo on each page at the top. I also wanted Jacks’ name over the logo so it makes it consistent with the business cards that have been designed. I had a few problems with the logo and the name, when I put Jacks’ name over the logo there were several letters that were not legible because of the darkness of the logo. To rectify this problem I used Adobe Photoshop to make edits to the logo so that it would not cause an issue on the website. On Adobe Photoshop I opened up the Logo and used the rubber tool, I also made sure that hardness was set to 0, this ensured that when I rubbed out on the image it would give a faded effect around the edges. With these settings I started rubbing the middle part of the logo where the text will go over. Once I had completed this I saved it as a JPG and imported it onto the website header, then I added the text after. With the changes made the text is legible.

I moved onto editing the homepage of the website, when researching the clients’ photos I found an image that I thought would work very well on the home page and that would grab the attention of the users of the website. I initially edited the text on the home page, as discussed with the client he didn’t want too much information on the home page, just a short message notifying users of the website “what they’re in for”. I created a text box and aligned it so that it centred on the webpage, I then went on to importing the image, I followed the same guidelines as I used for the text so I made sure it was centred on the page.

The next page I started developing was the videos page. This would hold some of the clients produced videos and he would also use this page to add videos of his future productions. Adding videos was very simple and was similar to the way I added a gallery so I was familiar with how to add videos. Once the videos had been imported on the page I double clicked on the videos to make changes to them, prior to making the website I had collected the videos off the client through some of his websites and from him directly so I had copies of his videos on my computer and memory stick. However when I came to changing the settings I had realised that you only had to apply the link to the video, luckily I had the links saved with the videos so this was very simple. Once I applied the links to the videos the website editing suite made the changes to the website and updated the videos. I then went on to the edit the information about the individual videos, the client also wanted links to where his work has been published, so within the text I linked the relevant text to external websites. This was very simple to do, I just highlighted the text, selected the ‘Link’ option which allowed me to put in a link to redirect the user.

The last web page I developed was the contact page, on the left hand side of the WiX editing suite it gives you the options to add various different types of media. For this I selected to add another ‘Page’ this then opened a popup box giving me an option of different types of pages I could add to the website, this ranged from a blank page, music pages, online stores and other site content. For the contact page I used the Contact Form option, this create a basic contact page which I was able to edit. Within this contact page it provided social media links, information about the client and a contact form that users could use to message the client. To ensure that the client would get the relevant emails from the from I updated the contact form so when users submit a question an email gets sent to the client with the information in the contact form.

I have been updating my initial Gantt Chart in line with the progress made with the project so far. On the Gantt Chart it says the completion date for the website to go live is to be on the 23rd of March however I am planning to finish the project before this date, but I have allowed contingency time in the Gantt Chart in case I encounter any problems.

Today the clients 50 business cards arrived, I am very happy with the way these have been produced, they look very professional. I have sent photos of the cards to the client to see his opinion and I will pass on the business cards at the final sign off of the project.

Production Phase - Business Card Production

I used Adobe Photoshop to create the designs for the business cards. The website Moo.com allowed me to to download a business card template and use this to design the cards. I wanted to incorporate the clients logo so I used the vector image of the logo from Illustrator and imported it into Photoshop. I then realigned the logo so that it was centred on the business card to be eye-catching, and for a more professional look.

On the back of the business card I have included all the information of the client; this will allow potential customers to contact the client directly through various different means of social media. All of these social feeds have already been set up by the client therefore I have not needed to create any new accounts for the project.

I was able to upload the front and back images onto Moo.com and confirm the production of 50 business cards for my client.

Production Phase - Text Theming and Consistency

Jack emailed saying that he liked two fonts initially, Fragment Core and Nixie One, because they looked simplistic and professional. However I received another email from him later during the day saying that he had changed his mind and wants a font called Bodoni 72 Book. He has chosen this font as he is currently producing another video for his website and he will be using this font for all of his future productions. So changing the font to Bodoni 72 Book for the website will give a consistent look for his future productions.

I will ensure that the font of the website now meets the new requirements set by Jack, this will have to be updated on the business cards design too.

Production Phase - Logo Version 2

I used Adobe Photoshop to add the text to the logo, however I am still not happy with it because I started to edit the image on Photoshop the quality of the logo has decreased. Therefore I will apply the text onto the Logo through Illustrator, once this is completed I shall email the logo to the client to confirm he is happy with the logo and so the production of the business cards can begin.

Production Phase - Logo Development Time Lapse

I created a logo for the client using Adobe Illustrator, this video shows how I created the logo. This is the first version of the logo, in the video it shows how I design the film strip that the logo is based on. I also experimented on how to incorporate Jack Munsch's name onto the logo which is shown in the latter stages of the video however I was very unhappy with the look of the text on the object so i decided not to put the text onto the object.
