Summary:
By no means does Lan Qiren like Wei Wuxian. Of course not. But yelling at Wei Wuxian is a pastime for him to enjoy and it is a grievous insult for Sect Leader Yao to take that joy away from him.
Aka: how Lan Qiren, of all people, ended up defending Wei Wuxian in front of everyone.

Comments:
Lan Qiren knows that Jiang Wanyin would like Wei Wuxian to return to Yunmeng, even if only for part of the year, and that Jin Rulan would like Wei Wuxian to join him in Lanling to help him clean up the mess left behind by Jin Guangyao but Wei Wuxian is a member of Gusu Lan now. He has officially married into Gusu Lan and even has his own forehead ribbon (that Wangji wears after their ribbons were exchanged as per Gusu marriage ritual) and Lan Qiren isn’t letting Wei Wuxian go anywhere. Because he is useful. No other reasons.
Definitely not because Wei Wuxian’s specific brand of chaos is growing on him.
WWX sure is a troublemaker but he’s Gusu Lan’s troublemaker now so no one but LQR himself is allowed to badmouth him! Also, WWX is very adept at teaching, he’s an invaluable asset to the sect, a highly skilled cultivator and he makes the best tea to boot but, of course, LQR still totally dislikes him!
So when one day during a conference Sect Leader Yao verbally attacks WWX, LQR just won’t stand by and watch it happen. But only because “an insult to the Chief Cultivator’s spouse is an affront to Gusu Lan”. (Sure Jan, I mean--Grandmaster Qiren!) Well, needless to say, everybody is shocked speechless. WWX is absolutely not moved to tears by LQR coming to his defense.
I seriously love me some frenemies-in-laws so there’ll also be the frenemyinlaw tag from now on!
