The moment between tranquility and pricking sensation on every inch of her exposed skin was brief and forgettable, already being erased by her brain as the duo escaped on foot out of the open area. There was nothing to grab before their departure, and even if there had been, the increasingly alarming sound of the wasp’s wings fluttering was more essential to give their attention to. It seemed to help more if she didn’t swat or try to keep them away from her. Her flight and Shimmer as a shield seemed to lead to less damage. Her arms and the left side of her face tingled, but that was a problem for later. Leading the way, Gemma attempted to return to the jungle she’d discovered the day prior. Buzzing vibrations, beady eyes, and butterfly wings blinded her, even if she stared down at the concrete path below. Niko grunted and huffed up a storm behind her. She hadn’t relayed her strategy of no swatting to him just yet.
Not a jungle, but a forest was suddenly the setting around her. The vortex of insects must’ve taken interest in something on the path, because they did not follow. Gemma scurried until she reached a flowing river. Her knees hit the ground as she splashed water on her face and rubbed the droplets of her irritated skin. Niko stood off to the side, looking to search his own skin for remnants of their attackers.
“Do you have any idea where we are?” she asked the boy, so desperate to regain some control over the situation that she didn’t notice they weren’t alone.
