"I’m okay staying out here if you are. If you want to go inside, then that’s fine too."
He highly doubted that was completely truthful, but at the same time really wanted to stay outside. There was currently a pause in the fireworks, but there was sure to be more, right?
"...alright...but if you get too cold you...can...um...borrow my coat." Gus offered, probably blushing slightly as he did so. Not wanting to look straight at Aria with his face possibly bright red, he looked out across the balcony. There was quite the crowd around at this point, but he could make out the feather from the still un-named stranger who had given him the breadstick - just before the entire switch-bodies fiasco. He couldn't spot Milo - which wasn't a surprise considering the elf's height - or his tall partner Slothie. Maybe they had already left? He frowned slightly at the thought of it - he had actually enjoyed Milo's presence slightly; he had a bad habit of clinging to proactive people, people that didn't mind being hidden behind.
As a bard he liked to hide behind people.
There wasn't really anyone else in the crowd he could recognize, save breadstick-guy's-partner, but did he count? He hadn't even half-talked to him, not even for a fleeting question of a breadstick. Everyone seemed interesting enough, all different kinds of people gathered together...there was something rather comforting about it, even, which was weird - normally he didn't like large crowds, but...it felt like a misfit among a bunch of misfits - heck, there was a Shadow...Corrupt..?...Alchemist out in the crowd somewhere - and it almost made him feel...what was a good word?
Oddly enough, hidden was the word that came to his mind.
There was an almost painfully silent period where the fireworks had faded away in preparation for the next set just as Damian finished talking. Damian worried about whether he had offended Sedanas with his question. Finally, the reply came:
The answer came as a great surprise to Damian, and he turned his head over his shoulder to stare at Sedanas. Time seemed to slow down as he processed these words, many emotions flashing through his mind as the dreaded memory threatened to show itself for the second time that day. He turned back to face the fireworks without a word, face blank and eyes not seeing the colours and designs anymore.
Even someone like him… could do it, he thought hollowly. His hands trembled as he lifted one hand to touch his own cheek, feeling blood running down his face as if he was reliving the nightmare once again. The dark silhouette of a person sprawled on the floor exploded with the fireworks, and he flinched. The vision was gone as fast as it had come by. Damian blinked a few times, feeling the prick of tears threatening to spill from his eyes, but wiped his eyes hastily before they could do so.
“You… you are a brave man.” Damian could barely form the words coherently, and his voice cracked. His hands formed fists as he stared at the ground far below the balcony. Internally, he was wound up like a ball of rubber bands, ready to flee at the first sign he wouldn’t be able to control his emotions. Almost bitterly and as an afterthought, he murmured, “I wish I had that kind of courage…”
He didn’t expect Sedanas to comfort him, or say anything at all in response. After all, they had only just met—under unusual circumstances as well. If anything, he hoped that Sedanas wouldn’t judge him for being so weak, despite him knowing that he would be fully justified in doing so.
Damian found himself leaning on the banister of the balcony a couple moments after leaving the stairwell, staring up at the bright colours that shot into the sky and exploded. Although it hurt his eyes a little to watch directly, the sight enraptured him.
“Damian!”
Eh? He snapped out of his thoughts, a little dazed, but turned to see that his partner had come up to join him after all.
“Hey. Glad to see that you decided (to stop being a loner) see the show in the end,” Damian nodded in greeting, face lighting up with a warm orange as more fireworks drew elegant designs into the night sky. “I thought I didn’t care much for fireworks, but they’re pretty spectacular here,” he noted offhandedly.
Maybe it was just a source of relief from all the events that had happened in the past few hours. This certainly wasn’t going to be something he’d forget, though. He turned back to gazing at the fireworks above, reflecting on how he thought about the party.
Sedanas was a strange man, to say the least. The curse was probably only one mystery out of the many that made up his character. Damian had more questions about him than when he first met him, which bothered him immensely.
“What did you do to get that curse, anyways?” he murmured in what he thought to be a casual tone, half to himself, but half hoping that Sedanas would hear and decide to answer (for whatever reason) so that his curiosity may be satisfied. He lowered his gaze and began to trace the patterns in the banister with his index finger listlessly. Perhaps he shouldn’t have asked; it was probably a touchy subject for him.
Damian breathed out in relief as Sedanas didn’t seem to mind too much about losing his glove. It didn’t seem that he wanted to see the fireworks, though it probably would have been a bad idea.
Damian nodded silently—it made sense, but he still wasn’t really that hungry. He doubted that the host would make his/her guests suffer for much longer, though that was no reason to let his guard down. What if the food had been magically tainted somehow too? Damian was suspicious of many things in this castle.
After glancing around the room at the guests still milling about on the main floor, Damian began to feel a little drowsy. It probably wasn’t a good idea to fall asleep in a place like this. Maybe I should go out and get some fresh air again. The fireworks might wake me up a little, he thought.
“Hey. I’m, uh, gonna head up and see the fireworks after all,” Damian called out in Sedanas’ general direction. He was going to invite him along, but then remembered that Sedanas preferred to stay away from crowds of people. If he wanted to come, then he could come by his own accord. Then he promptly headed for the staircase that would take him to the second floor’s balcony.
It wasn’t long before Damian confirmed that Sedanas had indeed made it back into his body safely. Shortly after, the man on the giant’s shoulders also woke up. Relieved, he watched as Sedanas seemed to flounder for a bit, as if searching for something.
“Pardon, but um…do you know what you did to my glove?"
Oh. For a moment Damian looked lost, and he glanced back towards the place he had been stricken ill by Sedanas’ curse. Maybe he had dropped it over there? He walked back, scanning the blue floor, looking under the table, and even pushing aside some dishes of food on the table for any trace of dark gray. The glove wasn’t there, of course—it had mysteriously disappeared. This could be bad.
That was a huge understatement. He couldn’t just tell Sedanas to not kill anyone either, since the curse was obviously uncontrollable. And without his glove… The whole ordeal was mentally draining for Damian, and he dropped onto a chair in exhaustion, rubbing his forehead. Where could the glove be? Did someone—or something—overhear their conversation during the body switch and take it with malicious intent? It stressed him to think about it, more so than it normally would. Perhaps it was just a result of too many things going on in such a short span of time.
The sound of fireworks began to fill the room, sounding like it came from above. Damian guessed that that would be where all the guests would gather next. It would probably be crowded… in other words, a bad place for Sedanas to be without his glove. He didn’t particularly care for fireworks, so ultimately it was Sedanas’ decision on whether they should go, or remain behind to search.
“Well, what do you say we do next?” he questioned in the hopes that Sedanas would have thought an alternative magical solution out of nowhere.
Damian felt a little resistance as he pulled Sedanas towards the fallen giant, and looked back to see that his own body was not faring well with the exchange of energy going on. It seemed that the curse worked more strongly on the outside than on the inside… In fact, Damian felt a little buzzed with energy now. He wanted to let go, but by the time he decided to do so, he was already on his way out of the hellhole that was Sedanas’ body.
The next he knew, he felt the familiar weight of his spirit weapon on his back and the cool air on his bare arms. He took a huge gulp of air, as if he had just surfaced from taking a deep dive under water. A burning sensation on his left caused him to stumble backwards and let go of Sedanas’ hand. He felt extremely worn out, and he wanted to just get out of this place. Taking a moment to regain his posture, he turned to the now seemingly alright giant.
She towered above him at full height, as expected. Despite his lack of vitality, he ruffled the hair on the back of his head in a sheepish gesture, eyes turned downward.
“Hey, sorry for taking so long to get here. We had… some complications with the body switch. Are you going to be okay with him…?” His eyes trailed over the now unconscious body of the male on the giant’s shoulders, thinking about his skills in medicine but coming up with no solutions that he could easily do on the spot.
Then he looked sideways at Sedanas. Did he make the body switch okay? He wondered again why he had been cursed, but maybe later when there weren’t so many people around. Or, not at all, since Sedanas probably wouldn’t welcome questioning about it. But he was so very curious about it…
Damian watched with his heart in his throat as Sedanas looked at his hand. For a moment he almost believed that he might abandon him and take all of his stuff once he was dead, but again he was proved wrong about Sedanas’ personality. Within an instant of touching his hand, Damian began to feel his energy return. So he was right after all…?
“Umm… thanks for helping me out there. Are you okay? I think… I’m going to be fine, as long as we keep…”
Danger successfully averted, he realized he was holding another person’s hand. He hadn’t done that for a long time, being the traveller he was. The longer he stared at their hands, the more he felt his ears heat up. He quickly turned away to hide his infuriatingly easy to embarrass nature, almost tripping over himself from the dizziness that came with fast movements.
“L-let’s go and help that giant now, we’ve kept them waiting long enough!” Damian almost cried out in frustration as he heard himself stutter, and tugged hastily on Sedanas-in-his-body’s hand, completely ready to move on.
