With regard to the e petition on electoral reform, do you know if the amount of signatures relates to how much time is spent debating the issue? Or is it the same amount of time regardless of whether you get 500 or 50,000 signatures?
Currently only 500 signatures is required to get a response from the government.
The NDP MP who got the bill passed that made this e-petition system wants to require parliament debate any petition that gets 100,000 signatures. Article from 2015:
The new process will be reviewed in two years. At that time, Stewart hopes to include a requirement for one hour of parliamentary debate if a petition receives 100,000 signatures.
That hasn’t happened yet as far as I can tell.
