Right next door to @cafe.de.las.sonrisas is Tio Antonio's hammock shop, which is employed by only individuals with disabilities - some can't see, some can't hear, some have other disabilities, but they all make incredible hammocks! These hammocks are sought after by individuals all over the world, and some request specific colours and/or patterns for their hammocks. #photographerswithoutborders #PWBSchool #pwbnicaragua #nicaragua #cafedelassonrisas #discovernicaragua #travelphotography #seethroughanewlens #photobynila
@cafe.de.las.sonrisas was the very first cafe in Latin America, and fourth in the world, that is staffed entirely by people with hearing disabilities. The entire cafe is sign language friendly - with a pictogram menu, and a wall covered with common words and phrases and the alphabet and how to sign them. They also have the most delicious pancakes and smoothies! #photographerswithoutborders #PWBSchool #pwbnicaragua #nicaragua #cafedelassonrisas #discovernicaragua #travelphotography #seethroughanewlens #photobynila (at Café de las Sonrisas)
Meet Tio Antonio ('Uncle Tony'). After realizing the lack of opportunities in the country for individuals with disabilities, Tio Antonio created Cafe de las Sonrisas, along with a Hammock shop, both which only employ individuals with disabilities. We met him on our second day in Granada, and were immediately inspired by both his vision and words. He said to us, "I want you to enjoy Nicaragua, but also really SEE Nicaragua," meaning get to know the history and culture of the country, and look at it more than from a tourist's point of view. He also said to us, "Your camera is your power." We are able to share these stories from countries that people may not know much about. He wanted us to share his story of Cafe de las Sonrias and the change that he is creating, with the hope that it will inspire others to do the same. Meeting him so early in our trip, and hearing his powerful words, left us all with a lasting impression and the intention to create something worthwhile throughout our trip. @cafe.de.las.sonrisas #photographerswithoutborders #PWBSchool #pwbnicaragua #nicaragua #cafedelassonrisas #discovernicaragua #travelphotography #seethroughanewlens #photobynila (at Café de las Sonrisas)

Colombia is the second most diverse country in the world. It is home to incredible wildlife and breathtaking landscapes, as well as home to multiple indigenous groups. Misión Gaïa works to educate people on Eco-tourism and ensure that both residents and travellers of Minca get to enjoy the wonderful village for years to come. Photo by @bednarphoto #seethroughanewlens #pwbColombia
Although the population of Minca is small, the village is still struggling with pollution, and a large number of stray animals creating animal welfare issues. This issue would only be made worse by the proposed high way extension which would bring tourists into the mix as well as destroy forests along the way. Sustainable tourism is important because the impact of tourism can effect a community negatively in many ways: culturally, environmentally and economically.
