MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – At the Manchester Arena in Machester, England former undisputed heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (26-0, 19 KOs) made a successful return after being out of the ring for nearly 1,000 days. Fury scored a stoppage victory over Sefer Seferi (23-2, 21 KOs) after four rounds. The most exciting portion of the fight may have been Fury’s entrance when he came out to classic songs such as LL Cool J’s “Don’t Call it a Comeback” and Mark Morrison’s “Return of the Mack.” From that point, the festivities took a downturn.
Before the first bell rang, Fury and Seferi shared a pre-fight kiss on the lips. The first round was a feel out round for both men in which both men did more showboating than actual boxing. The remaining rounds in the bout played out in the same pattern Seferi would rush in with a wild attack that drove Fury to the ropes without landing any punches. Fury would then come back with some jabs, rights hands, and some well-timed uppercuts. After four rounds, Seferi had seen enough action and pulled himself out of the bout.
Now that Fury has gotten his obligatory comeback fight out of the way, there will be expectations for him to take on a higher level of competition. The four rounds inside the ring with Seferi showed little as to how Fury would do against the likes of Anthony Joshua or Deontay Wilder. Fury needs to stay active to stay in shape and keep his skills sharp to compete with the elite in the heavyweight division.
On the undercard, Dallas, Texas native Maurice Hooker (24-0-3, 16 KOs) defeated former WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan (33-1, 13 KOs) for the vacant WBO 140-pound title. Hooker won a split decision victory with scores of 115-113 and 117-111 with one judges scoring the bout 117-111 for Flanagan.
