2021.03.20 Vergil Ortiz Jr vs Maurice Hooker vacant WBO International welters
Vergil Ortiz Jr stops Maurice Hooker in the 7th.
Hooker fought his ass off and looked like he might pull it out for a hot minute. Had Ortiz just frozen on defense. Unfortunately for Hooker, he got dragged into a dog fight. Ortiz eventually broke through with the body shots and took away Hooker’s jab. Broke him down, dropped him in the 6th. And came back in the 7th and seemed to have dislocated Hooker’s elbow with a body shot. I don’t think dude is ready for Crawford or Spence but he’s fun to watch and should get a fight with a top 147lber.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Mission accomplished for José Ramírez. The undefeated World Boxing Council (WBC) champion arrived in enemy territory with the objective of adding the World Boxing Organization (WBO) title to his collection, and he did it. Ramírez (25-0, 17 KO's), of Avenal, Calif., blasted then-undefeated champion Maurice Hooker with a stoppage at 1:48 of the sixth round in a unification clash that took place at College Park Center. Now, Ramirez will set his sights on unifying all the belts at 140 pounds. "I am ready to face everyone in the 140-pound division," said Ramirez. “Every time I trust more and more in my abilities. I just took the title from a great, undefeated champion. I was determined to get out of here with two world titles, and I did it. I want to face the best fighters in the division. I want all the titles. That is my goal,”

The fairytale ending wasn’t meant to be. Oklahoma City native Alex Saucedo fell short in his first world title challenge, as Maurice Hooker defended his WBO junior welterweight title against Saucedo via 7th-round TKO In front of 4,102 fans at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. "Alex is a great fighter. He came to fight, and I came to fight, and I went right at him,” Hooker said. "I knew the first couple of rounds would be tough, but eventually it would be my time to take over." Said Saucedo: "He's a champion for a reason. Now, I am going to rest, enjoy my family, and come back stronger. I gave it my very best in the ring." Saucedo (28-1, 18 KOs) landed the first major blow of the night, knocking Hooker down with a right hand in the second round, causing blood to gush from his nose. Hooker responded with a late flurry to end the round. The fight entered a familiar pattern, as Saucedo marched forward and Hooker (25-0-3, 17 KOs) landed flush counter punches. Eventually, Hooker took over, as cuts over Saucedo’s left eye opened up. Hooker, using precision punching, knocked Saucedo down with a right hand in the seventh. The end came soon after, and Hooker, a native of Dallas, Texas, left Oklahoma with his world title.

Kavaliauskas (21-0, 17 KOs) made no secret that the man he wants to face next is WBO welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford, who was seated ringside. "I want to fight the best in the welterweight division, and the best guy right now is Terence Crawford,” Kavaliauskas said. "I am ready for that fight next." Said Arriaza: "I know I had him in trouble. I was the one who was dominating and was in control of the fight. The "Red River Rivalry" — the pugilistic version —has kicked off. WBO junior welterweight champion Maurice Hooker, from Dallas, Texas, will defend his world title Friday evening against Oklahoma City native Alex Saucedo at the Chesapeake Energy Arena, home of the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder. This will be the first title defense for Hooker (24-0-3, 16 KOs), who won the belt June 9 when he traveled to Manchester, England, and defeated Terry Flanagan via split decision. Saucedo (28-0, 18 KOs) earned his first world title shot with a sensational, bloody seventh-round TKO against Lenny Zappavigna on June 30 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. The undercard, including the welterweight showdown between Egidijus "The Mean Machine" Kavaliauskas and Roberto Arriaza, will stream live at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+ — the new multi-sport, direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service from The Walt Disney Company’s Direct-to-Consumer & International segment in conjunction with ESPN.
Hooker and Saucedo worked out Monday at the Azteca Boxing Club. This is what they had to say. Maurice Hooker "This is his first time in a world title fight, so he's nervous. It's his first big fight at home. A championship. I know he's nervous." "I'll tell you this. Don't blink, because I'm coming." "I'm feeling good, feeling confident in myself. I'm ready to fight." Alex Saucedo "Maurice Hooker is a champion for a reason. He's a great fighter with a good reach and power in both of his hands. We have a tough fight on our hands, but we will be ready for anything that he brings to the table." "I'm going to show boxing fans the real me on Nov. 16. He can say what he wants about me getting hit a lot, but I don't have any draws on my record. He says I've been hit a lot, but if you have three draws on your record, that means you're not that hard to hit." "I am a different fighter than Terry Flanagan, who he won the title from. As always, I'm going to give it my all in the ring. I just want to beat him up and become the new WBO junior welterweight champion of the world."
"Hooker's fight with Flanagan. All I have to say is I'm a different fighter than Flanagan. On Friday, he will see the type of fighter I am."
