On the surface, Kabuto remains very level-headed when dealing with those he dislikes or hates. His go-to is to clench his jaw and smiles while secretly fantasizing about their demise. As a spy his personal feelings towards others don’t matter so it’s very hard to catch him letting the mask slip unless he wants you to. But that doesn’t mean he’ll forget your discretion either. Kabuto is an incredibly petty, jealous person who will put you on his kill list without a second thought. You may not die today or tomorrow but one day when you’ve long forgotten how you pissed him off Yakushi Kabuto will orchestrate a very tragic accident. So I guess to answer the question Kabuto deals with feelings of dislike by murder.

☾ : On a sleepless night, what would they be found doing?

Bold of you to assume Kabuto sleeps. Depends. Sometimes he can be found sitting at the kitchen table, sipping on tea or coffee. Other times he’ll be with Orochimaru entangled in the sheets and afterglow. In canon he might go down to the labs and putter around with menial tasks. He uses the time to let his mind wander and think about anything from petty grievances to complex problems. In modern he can be spotted reading medical journals and making notes. You’ll never find him doing nothing. 

❣: Describe a way that will earn affection (whether platonic or romantic) from them.

If you pre-empt what he needs, even if it’s in a small way. He’s not used to be people stepping in and being reliable. Kabuto has a very ‘do everything yourself’ mentality. The hardest part is probably getting him to allow you to be decisive. Most people don’t get far enough for him to trust them to do a good job.

♆ : Are they prone to violent outbursts or thoughts?

His thoughts are constantly riddled with the violence, usually over relatively petty issues. He’s definitely someone who finds it therapeutic to to imagine the thousand different ways he could murder you. Kabuto manages to contain himself most of the time, but it’s the equivalent of putting a tight lid on a pressure cooker. Eventually he erupts. There are a few clear triggers for his violent outbursts, usually involving instances which challenge his worldview. Kabuto maintains a very black and white view of human nature. While he understands there is technically a lot of nuance he dislikes the idea that said nuances provide uncertainty in his analysis of situations, people, ect. Those who act foolishly based on love, friendship, or for intangible ideals are idiots in his mind. When they espouse their philosophies they run a real chance of pissing him off. Their views challenge the very nature of his own cynical understanding of the world and portray a level of unconditional security and comradery which he has never had.

♥ : Name one thing about the way their emotions work that they despise.

Everything. Kabuto is actually a very emotionally based individual. This has proven unfortunate as he favours a hyper-rational approach to life. Such a duality has often left him attempting to rationalize the irrational. Get mad at a 12 year old Naruto for risking his life to protect those he loves? Totally rational. Kill subordinates who may get too close to Orochimaru out of preemptive jealousy? Totally rational. Inject the DNA of Orochimaru and then start a war in his memory after his untimely demise? Totally. Rational.

GENERAL

It’s not your average master/servant relationship. If it were it would imply that Orochimaru had some upper hand, that Kabuto somehow needed him more than he needed Kabuto. That is not the case. Orochimaru needs a physician but even more importantly, he needs someone who is willing to go above and beyond their duties and act as a buffer.  Kabuto is a caregiver. Because Kabuto has always formed his identity around serving others he has developed a need to be needed. This is what triggered the parasitic nature of their relationship. The longer they spend together, the closer they become the more they will rely on each other. It’s an unending spiral, which upon being interrupted, or worse broken completely has dire consequences. (As is proven by Kabuto’s breakdown after Orochimaru’s death.)

Kabuto may act subservient but his active role is closer to that of a co-conspirator and co-founder of the Village Hidden in the Sound. Especially in the beginning, many of the day to day tasks were delegated to him. His ability to manage small details allowed Orochimaru to build up his “village”.

His time with Orochimaru helped him form his own opinions on things. After so many years working as a spy, Kabuto wasn’t certain of many things. However, Orochimaru held a genuine interest in Kabuto’s perspective. While he originally tried to give what he thought would be the most acceptable answer, Kabuto soon learned that for Orochimaru there wasn’t necessarily a singular truth. Kabuto was given the freedom to think critically without concern for appeasing another.

They’re truly the only two people who can tolerate each other for prolonged periods of time. And even then they get absolutely sick of each other. Sometimes this leads to the absolute sickest roast-fests you’ve ever witnessed, other times they have to separate...or Kabuto does and everyone else scrambles to figure out how shit works without him.

"Finally gettin' sick of domestic bliss, huh?" She makes a show of looking towards an imaginary watch, counting the peach-fuzz strands of imperceptible hair in the place of numerals and clock-hands. "Took you longer than most of us thought. Which means I've jus' won a bet. If you snap an' kill someone, that's double winnings. Just a thought."

They are, naturally, looking at Suigetsu, who is definitely within listening range. Not that that is dissuading Karin and Orochimaru from their degrading musings in the slightest. "An' ethical in what sense? He has the moral backbone of a chocolate eclair."

"What? Hm? No." It's a speedy defence, and entirely dishonest. Her own blood betrays her in the colour clotting in her cheeks, eyes gauzy with the miasma of a tipsy haze. Karin's not wasted, by any means, but she's far from sober. "I never get drunk in front of people. Except when I do. Anyway, mind your bus'ness. S'not as if you're in any place t'judge. An' if that's what you intend t'do, Orochimaru-sama, I'd rather not-drink in peace."

‘ I was so hard on you, yelling, scolding… It must have hurt. ‘

imperceptibly, she freezesー an old, half-forgotten instinct compelling her to stiffen in anticipation of something awful. An antsy, disgusting feel crawls over her, some girlish token from Otogakure when once the white snake had loomed above her, white-faced and cold-eyed, his tempers unreliable and his furies black and sudden. It's an innocent enough sentence, compassionate even, that an onlooker would be unaware of any sinister lure beneath his croon. He always had a knack for that, Karin notes with some bitterness, that cruelty dressed as kindness. So easily it found its way in amidst praise and pity, goading her into a false sense of security before letting loose the full onslaught of his petty violences.

It's been a while since she's found herself in this position. That liminal space of uncertain danger, the teetering of fate in the balance, of being face to face with chaos and entirely unprepared for whatever outcome is thrust upon her. It's a powerlessness she had hoped never to again encounter, considering it a child's fear, not a grown woman's. Orochimaru was far from her entire world now, and her life did not sit in his hands anymore, subject to any whim or wrath that moved him.

And yet. And yet.

Here she finds herself again, taut with expectation, though now her mind is sharper, quicker: already she prepares herself for any labyrinthian turn he can send them off to, though among the myriad destinies that present themselves few are sincere. Maybe it's because of her that she expects the worst, accursed by a paranoia that, at times, verged on delusion. It's a hamartia bred in the bowels of the Hidden Sound, another one of her manifold survival mechanisms hard-wired into the most primordial parts of her, but she blames herself regardless. That, too, is a remnant. Everything is, these days. She hasn't changed much in all of these years, after all; she's just gotten better at hiding it.

He seems to have changed. Or at the very least, he's chosen to entertain himself best with the playground of domesticity. To think, he was a parent. To think, Otogakure was becoming a legitimate state, no longer some debauched arena barely maintaining the illusion of villagehood. The world had become a strange, unfathomable place in the last few years. One could argue this is a result of that change, yet another one of the white snake's metamorphoses, that this is some genuine attempt to reconcile long buried wounds.

Karin wishes he wouldn't bother. There was no point in attempting to exorcise old demons. She'd made her peace, or whatever sham she could dress as peace, a while ago. It was enough for her to glide past their history and play the part of equals. But it would appear that it wasn't enough for him.

If it's even real. It could be a trap. Most likely was. Hoping to trick her into some sort of false confession, lay her heart bare so that she made a more satisfying victim. A cruel game, comparable to the small tortures of cats and mice. Give her the room to speak her mind just to punish her, to cross the wires of her psyche and turn her mind against herself. Confusions of realities, the blurring between the real and ideal.

Her gut's leaning trap, so when she speaks it's with a calculated casualness; the sort of airy disposition attributed to one who hasn't, actually, thought about it very much. Playing dumb is usually beneath her, but she'd make an exception for now. Who could blame her? With Orochimaru as a potential opponent, Karin needs every weapon in her arsenal prepped and ready. ❝Hmm...❞ she feigns, at least, a meditative silence, not wanting to be perceived as ignorant or dismissive, ❝I don't know. Do you think it should have hurt?❞ Redirecting the onus from herself. She limits herself to a well-hidden mimicry, hesitant to contribute any original thought to the matter lest it should be taken in an unfortunate direction.
