what an interesting question, though! i don't think i've ever thought about what i anchor my portrayals to, honestly! usually my process of writing is jump started by a scene i'd like to explore applied to a character, so as i'm writing, i already have their reaction planned? if that makes sense?
but i guess ... one thing that drives my portrayals and actually propels me to make them MINE is............. ig my characterization of the specific trait of which i think drives someone to act and deliberate and even emote. and i know for a fact i spend a lot of time considering this as i'm going.
for example, with bakugo (and i know i write quite a different bakugo from a lot of other writers on here, which does make me a lil insecure because i like their bakugos !! for the most part) ... one thing that is super important to me to include is his crippling perfectionism and the way that part of him often... affects his interactions with others and/or you. So it's something i'm always thinking about when i am deliberately thinking... "what would he say or do in this scene if he was bothered by _?"
And for kiri, it would be the way he carries his shame. Or for shinso, his insecurities. things like that!! I'm not entirely sure if that's the proper way to describe it, but yeah!!!
anyway, i hope this wasn't too complicated and lengthy for you, sel! i'd love to hear what you think about when you write characters in different universes/moments too, and especially with a speechul boy like iwa ("i love shy buff men" written on my tshirt) !!!
