So today in Bioethics we talked about selective abortion
Or selective reduction - where a woman is pregnant with multiple fetuses and wants to abort one or more so that she's still pregnant but with fewer fetuses.
One of the women in class was legit sad that a woman would abort one of a pair of twins because of the "mental telepathy" that twins have. And to abort one fetus would deprive the other of this lifelong... magic.
People mostly were sort of talking about how it made them uncomfortable (as opposed to saying it was something that should be illegal) and talking about why a woman would do that. It was mostly agreed that this was a selfish thing to do, that parents who decide this are doing it for themselves, to make it easier for themselves. I pointed out that babies are expensive and a couple/mom/whoever might only be able to care for one baby, and having two would actually be such a strain on the family that the quality of life for both babies would greatly deteriorate.
The professor then said that one more baby wasn't really that much more expensive.
First up, I didn't say it was only a financial burden, but whatever. Second, BULL.SHIT. A second baby means TWICE the food, TWICE the diapers, and TWICE the cost of childcare. BULLSHIT it isn't "that much more".
But it's only the second class and I didn't want to get into it. She claims to be pro-choice, but she is clearly unfomfortable as hell with women actually getting abortion.
Also, people kept referring to the fetus as "the child" and I wanted to correct them. I abstained because this was supposed to be a discussion of a news article a student was assigned to bring in. If that sort of "mistake" goes down when we actually discuss the bioethics of reproductive rights, I will be correcting people. Don't give a fuck.
