Taking the Globe to School
Scituate High School Graduation / Maureen Quinlan for Boston.com
I would like to address an article that appeared on the front page of Sunday’s Real Estate section of the Boston Globe.
The main article was addressing whether towns across Massachusetts were a good fit for families to move to.
One of the maps the Globe generated was about the percentage of school-age children enrolled in public schools as of Jan. 1, 2013. The state average was 90.8% enrollment, but the Globe listed Scituate’s enrollment at 16.4%.
This seems impossible. If 83.6% of our children were enrolled in private schools, we’d probably have to be the richest town in America. If 83.6% of our children weren’t enrolled in school at all, we’d presumably be seeing roving gangs of 10-year-olds hanging out in the Harbor on a regular basis.
Checking the article out at #KellyForScituate HQ.
Interestingly, when the Globe published the article online, they seemed to have forgotten to publish this map.
So I decided to check the facts. According the U.S. Census Bureau, Scituate actually has about 87% enrollment of children in public schools.
What’s even better news is that roughly 99% of all school-age children in Scituate are enrolled in either public or private schools. So no roving gangs.
The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education releases a yearly report card on the performance of every school district in the Commonwealth.
According to the report card, Scituate is doing well. But as we all know, there is room for improvement in the quality of the facilities for our children.
When elected, I will push for much better facilities for all public schools in the district, so that kids can learn and develop, to create a successful foundation for the future of Scituate.
Unlike the Globe, I won’t forget about Scituate public schools when I’m elected.
