I was wondering why pretty much every marvel fic in the ao3 trope subvertion tag is about sex pollen, but, like, it's because @selenay936 wrote all of them.

Apparently they woke up one day and said "my fandom doesn't have enough sex pollen trope subversion fics" and wrote, like, five.

I'm not sure where I first encountered the idea of a Luna/Hermione X-Files AU. Clearly it was on Tumblr, but the specifics of when and where elude me. Needless to say, though, I was deeply intrigued by the premise. However, I struggled to find an actual fic that delivered on the idea. Even today, nearly a decade and a half after the heyday of Harry Potter fanfiction, it's hard to find stories that don't exclusively focus on Harry and Draco smooching. But I wanted to believe, pardon the pun, that a story like this existed, and this week my investigations paid off.

What was the first game you played through?

God, I can’t remember. I’ve been playing games since I was a little kid. It’ll be something back in the 80s on the Commodore 64 I reckon.

If we’re just talking console games then the first one I ever finished was Final Fantasy VIII I think. Yeah, I finished 8 before I finished 7 because 7 is HARD

Where do you publish your work?

Mostly AO3. I do have a website that I want to redesign and recode (mainly because I'm an oddball who loves the tinker with code). When I remember, I link to it from tumblr, livejournal and dreamwidth.

What medium/application/etc. do you write in or with?

I used to work with Word, but after being without it for a while, I started using GoogleDocs - and that's what I've done since then. It makes it easier for me to drop the story links off with the beta readers and for them to comment without having to make sure we use the same format/version etc. I also 'hard code' specific HTML features while I write (like bold and italic) because that way I know it's ready for use on AO3 and my website.

On the road I've been known to write in a notebook - going completely analogue *g*. I actually enjoy that. I also work on A3 sheets when planning - a throwback to mindmapping. I've tried various digital versions, but I keep going back to A3 sheets of blank paper and post-it notes XD

Do you collaborate with others?

For writing? Haven't in years. I used to team up with Nicci (and let me tell you the stories that came out on AIM after a bottle of wine! Look for Pink Elephants on Parade on my AO3 - it's Torchwood and we were nowhere near sober when doing that one). She also did the most amazing manips and I did pay her in fic sometimes ;). I do miss it a lot, the joint venture.

I've taken to doing BB and Reversebangs in both Star Trek (a few years back) and in X-men (the latter I still do and I still have fun doing this).

How much editing do you do before you publish?

I go over it with a fine tooth comb before letting a beta near it *g*. Shorter stuff I sometimes just leave for a day and edit again and don't go looking for a beta (I would if it was a little easier to find any - I don't blame the betas for it - I've seen them treated badly over the years and it's a hard job which not all writers appreicate). I've even taken to printing the long ones and going over it with a red pen *g*

Back when I did do original for the NaNoWriMo, I did edit extensively and then shelve the stories (They're still in my GDocs, probably never will leave there unless I decide they go up on my website when I'm done recoding it).

Do you listen to music when you write?

I either have the TV on with some movie I know back to front (like Pacific Rim or Avengers) or music - in the shape of movie scores. I'm very fond of Henry Jackman.

How do you decide what to write about?

Whatever idea tackles me at the time LOL - well, mostly I have have a txt doc on my laptop that I drop prompts into if I come across them on Tumblr (for later possible use). I have a notepad by the bed (because I often get ideas AFTER I've gone to bed and am trying to sleep). I have notes in my pockets when I get home from work of ideas I might work on in the future.

When do you write?

In the evenings after work, weekends - whenver I can find the time and other things aren't vying for my attention. I'm quite fond of writing after having been out on a run (I plot a lot while running *g*).

How often do you write?

Not nearly often enough. Some weeks I write nearly every day, other weeks not at all.

Do you take requests?

If I'm inspired by the requests. There are certain things that do nothing for my muses and I don't normally offer to do requests these days, because I feel I can't do the requests justice. However, I do occasionally jump in on Tumblr if someone asks in general. That said, I don’t mind at all if people would drop requests in my inbox. I used to do it on LJ and I kinda miss it (hint: my askbox/inbox/LJ/DW is always open).

Is there any genre or type of story you want to write but are hesitant to?

Not really. If the genre doesn't appeal to me, I don't feel any need to write it *g*

Any inspirational quotes, videos, tricks, articles, etc. that help you stay motivated?

No, not apart from do what works for you. I used to think I needed to write every day, but it started stressing me, so I've learned to just go with the flow and write when the urge and ideas are there.

If the Doctor appeared one day and offered to take you to anywhere in time and space, where would you go?

Wherever he wants to go, so long as it’s as far from home and this so called life I currently live as I can possibly get. 

I watched the original Broadchurch and loved it. Just the ads for Gracepoint hurt. Tennant sounds all wrong with an American accent.

I wanted to watch Gracepoint because, well, mostly Tenny, but also because I’d seen Broadchurch and knew that Gracepoint was the “Americanized” version and wanted to see how they differed. So far, I’m only on episode 5, the basic premise is the same, some names changed (most notably Tenny’s from Alec Hardy to Emmett Carver. Not sure why they thought that was necessary...), Gracepoint keeps hinting (heavily, I might add) at there being -- or at one time having been -- something between the Priest and Beth, etc. But the biggest thing that’s been bothering me is definitely the fact that for whatever reason, Tenny is trying to do an American accent (which, doesn’t always succeed. I’ve been having fun listening closely and giggling each time a word comes through with a very subtle but yet distinct English/Scottish accent undertone). “Millah.” “Leed.” etc. 

Honestly, I spent the first three episodes bursting into fits of giggles and hysterical laughter any time he talked. I listened to a DW audiobook he narrated where one of the characters was American, and yeah, he’s fantastic actor, but he really shouldn’t be trying to do American accents. They really do just sound all kind of wrong coming out of his mouth. I’ve closed my eyes and I don’t even picture him in my head when he talks, it just sounds so wrong and unlike him. 

Gonna try to stick it out though, there’s only ten episodes, so, I might survive. Ignoring the accent and just focusing on his pretty hair and eyes hasn’t been so bad, so far. Except, I keep hurting my hand by slamming it into the screen to try and flip his hair out of his eyes. LOL!

3. What is your absolute favorite kind of fic to write?

EMOTIONALLY AMBIVALENT ENDINGS.

Although people tend to complain, so that’s a downer.

But I just think. Messy things are great. And I love it when you can have a messy situation, and have it make sense, but still be messy. Take a mess and turn it into a different mess and have people UNDERSTAND the mess and appreciate it but it’s not the neat and tidiness people usually get in an ending. 

A scenario I’ve written out twice (Twilighting, Hot Fuzz and Swan Song, Glee) is of the main character being in a dream world. And the reader knows that this is a Bad Thing and of course we only want Good Things to happen to our faves. But the character is happy in that world and is willing to give up what they have to in order to stay there. So which is the happy ending? The one where the character is pulled out of their dream and has to suffer through reality, or the one where they stay in their fuzzy place to their own detriment? 

Ahhhhh, I love that stuff SO MUCH.

do you enjoy making your characters suffer?

I find value in making them suffer, which I don't think is the same as enjoying it. A lot of my writing projects are cathartic, and many plots need conflict and I think it's normal for people to suffer as a result of conflict. I guess that makes the most sense to me, and is the most interesting to me, and therefore what I'm motivated to actually write.

do you listen to music when you write?

Not these days. I did when I was younger. I do tend to listen to music while I'm plotting. I've made playlists that cover the themes I want to address and I've found that helpful in the past.

which is your favorite genre to write?

SFF realism is my favourite kind of world to play in. I guess interpersonal drama is my favourite topic to write about.
