How do you feel about using "lateral violence" to describe the relationship between trans people and intersex people?
Conflicted, is the short answer. Like those two groups can overlap which I think makes defining a horizontal or a vertical relationship strange? Especially since I think the relationship between transmasc. and transfem. wrt to intersex people are vastly different.
Like for the most part I find trans women to respect my intersex status and recognize how it impacts me. There are some who ignore it to talk about "cis passing privilege" without recognizing how my results on HRT are very interconnected with being intersex. But yeah largely other trans women are cool about things.
From an intersex perspective there is a push to distance myself from other trans women. To reach out and try to grasp at power through declaring a non similarity. Personally I think that's ultimately useless but the push is there. Though on the flip side some trans women (mostly older ones) try to claim to be IS to avoid dealing with transmisogyny. Obviously that's kind of gross via internalized shit but also because of appropriation.
Also cis or non-trans intersex people are fully capable of wielding and benefiting from transmisogyny. Which I have seen from several CAFAB intersex people, and non trans CFAB intersex people. I would guess that non trans CAMAB intersex people are the same but I have yet to meet one on tumblr or IRL.
However various transmasc people of differing identities have done things like tell me people can identify their gender as intersex (meaning their gender identity is intersex regardless of whether or not they have an IS condition) as well as claiming the h-slur for their bigender identity. I also tend to find that they are more likely to disregard my IS status. So yeah it's a big confusing cloud of complex relationships.
