A TOMB WITH A VIEW
Roman temple and house mausolea in Anatolia, 2nd/early 3rd centuries. Six are in the vicinity of Imbriogon, a resort town frequented by wealthy merchants from Seleucia. Others are in Hierapolis (Pamukkale), Milas (Mylasa) and Mezgit Kalise.
When one of them moved through the center of Seleukia just as it was getting dark-- moved like a young man, tall, extremely handsome, the joy of immortality in his eyes, his hair black and perfumed-- the people going by would gaze at him, and they would ask each other who he was, if he was a Greek from Syria, or a stranger. But some who looked more carefully would understand and step aside; and as he disappeared under the colonnade, among the shadows and the evening lights, going toward the quarter that lives only at night, with orgies and debauchery, with every kind of intoxication and desire, they would wonder which of Them it could be, and for what suspicious pleasure he'd come down into the streets of Seleukia from the August Celestial Mansions.

I❤️🇹🇷 Repost @antiqua_archeologia with @get_repost ・・・ 🇮🇹 Mosaico delle Muse, Zeugma, Turchia. 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🇬🇧 Mosaic of the Muses, Zeugma, Turkey. The Mosaic of the Muses was found in a large room of a house that archaeologists have called "House of the Muses". The Mosaic represents the portraits of the nine Muses, identifiable through their names written in Greek. At the center of the mosaic is the Muse Calliope, surrounded by the busts of her sisters. According to the ancient Greek poet Hesiod, Calliope was the oldest and the most beautiful of the nine Muses, protectress of the epic poetry. 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 📹 Video by @arkeogenc 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹🔸🔹🔸 #turkey #turchia #zeugma #seleucia #gaziantep #mosaic #mosaico #mosaicodellemuse #muse #ancientart #mosaicofthemuses #muses #art #antiqua_archeologia 👍 #archaeology #archeology #travel #travelling #archeo #archeologia #heritage #worldheritage #beniculturali #materpiece #unesco #archeologia #archeologicalsite #heritage #heritagesite https://www.instagram.com/p/BsBQd_1h4Kg/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=129qj4wv8rfq5
