The Self Is Nothing
Saying “the self is nothing” sounds decisive, but it collapses an important distinction. The self is not an object but it is not nothing either. It is a process that organizes other processes.
A computer analogy helps, but needs correction. There is no “Asus inside the computer” as a little entity, that’s true. But there is still an operating system. memory management, a processes coordinating input and output. That is not nothing. If you remove that coordination, the machine doesn’t reveal some deeper truth, instead it stops functioning coherently.
The same applies to us people. What you call “I” is not a thing you can point to. It is a name we appoint to the ongoing integration of sensory input, memory, prediction, an action selection.There is no central “self-object,” but there is a self-model being continuously updated.This is exactly how Thomas Metzinger frames it, the self is a model that the system uses to represent itself as a unified agent.
