Edge was the first to wake up when Twisted entered the cave.
“Sorry there, didn’ mean ta wake ya.” Twisted apologised sitting across from them.
“What time is it?” Edge asked looking at the mouth of the cave.
“Somewhere in the mornin’.”Twisted replied, “don’ gotta good concept of time down ‘er y'know?”
“Yeah.” Edge sighed stretching out a bit. He looked down to Rus and Sage.
"You three sleep ok?" Twisted asked glancing down to Sage.
"Yeah it was alright." Edge smiled, glancing around.
"So what were you two doin' in th' forest all on yer own?" Twisted asked.
"We were on the run." Edge answered. Twisted hummed in reply.
"Do you know a next of profit?" Edge wondered. Twisted locked eyes with Edge for a second and replied. "Yeah me."
"What?" Edge gaped staring at Twist.
"Yeah th' next ta take over the oracle 'n stuff, right?" Twist asked smiling to himself.
"Yeah." Edge replied dumbfounded.
"I figured I would've seen you two earlier what with the huntin' incident an all." Twisted smiled wider.
"What hunting incident?" Edge asked snapping out of his stupor.
"When ya shot me." Twist chuckled recalling the memory. Edge's face flushed with embarrassment.
"That was you I shot?! But your not-" Edge broke off.
"Wolf-ified?" Twist asked finishing Edge's statement. " 'takes too much effort ta keep that form. Ya caught me 'n Sugs at a bad time."
"Sugs?" Edge questioned looking back to Twist. He nodded in response.
"That fox ya almos’ killed 's my girl. M'lady." Twist replied glancing at Rus briefly. "Good thing ya got me instead cuz 'parently we 'ad pups on 'e way an didn' even know."
Edge glanced at Rus as well eyes briefly flashing over Sage.
“I-I. I’m so sorry.” Edge whispered gripping the sheets in thought. To shoot someone was unforgivable to himself already. But to almost shoot a pregnant monster Edge would never be able to handle the thought.
“Hey, ’s a’ight.” Twist consoled snapping Edge out of his stupor.
“But, I, I could of.” Edge stumbled over his words. He couldn’t bring himself to say it.
“But ya didn’. An tha’s what matters.” Twisted smiled, Edge sighed. He was too tense to aware, he just wanted to go back home and forget this week ever happened. But of course he couldn’t, his home was destroyed his loved ones in danger and they were in a dirt hole with a dog on legs. “Not all that great is it?”
“What?” Edge asked, once again snapping out of his stupor.
“Not great being depended on, is it?” Twist asked smiling sadly at him. Edge sighed and tried to let the rest of the tension melt away.
“No. No it’s not.” Edge mumbled looking back to his boyfriend and child.
“Look I know how yer feelin, but think of it dis way; all ya gotta do ‘s find the rest a yer possy and save the world. No big deal.” Twist smiled matter of factly.
“We almost died!” Edge raged, body going tense again and clenching his fists in the sheets.
“Easy there, easy darlin’. No need ta get hostil’ wit’ me.” Twist eased holding his hands up in surrender. Rus stirred in his sleep lightly, Edge glanced down at him worrying he had woken his lover. When he saw the other still asleep his tension eased. They sat in silence, neither wanting to say a word.
“This is all my fault.” Edge sighed closing his eyes.
“ ‘ey darlin’ no one’s blamin’ ya.” Twist consoled placing a hand on Edge’s shoulder.
“I should have left when I had the chance. If Rus would have just stayed away.” Edge muttered, staring in anger at the sheets below him. “We wouldn’t be in this problem.”
“Do ya think ‘ed be happy wit’ anyone else?” Twist asked trying to get Edge to look at him.
“He’d be safer.” Edge countered gripping the sheets tighter.
“But would ‘e be happy?” Twist held looking Edge in the eyes. Edge sighed.
“I suppose not.” Edge settled finally letting go of the poor wrinkled sheets. Edge wrinkled his nose ridge in distaste at the mess of sheets and the fold lines he left.
“C’mon, why don’ we go an’ catch some food. I’m sure you two are prolly starvin’.” Twist smiled standing from the bed and exiting the hole. Edge nodded to himself and followed making sure Rus was safe before he left.
"Nothing is more frightful than being haunted by your own self."
