While I generally agree that self diagnosing should stop, I understand some skepticism people have towards health professionals from a personal standpoint. Recently I hadn't been feeling well and even had to go to the emergency room for a suspected bowel blockage. There was no blockage, but they said I had a high white blood cell count. They didn't give me antibiotics (for reasons not explained to me) instead they gave me pain medication for bowel pain and sent me on my way. I followed up at my general practitioner's a few days after, still not feeling well. She assessed me, said it could be an infection. She recommended I stop taking the pain mess as they cause constipation (wtf?) but then sent me on my way. No medication to treat an infection. Nothing. Just "come back if you still aren't feeling well". I waited a week and a half later and still didn't feel well. I went back again (had to wait another week to schedule an appointment) and they told me bowel infections typically take longer to get over and repeated what they told me before. I asked them why they won't prescribe antibiotics and they said something along the lines of "to make sure antibiotics are still viable against bacteria we want to make sure it isn't something your body can handle." They sent me on my way. I asked for a second opinion two weeks later. Same. Finally my grandpa (former doctor himself) recommended me go to his doctor. It was a three hour trip but she could see me right away. I explained what was going on and she ran ALL the tests. Turns out I had a bladder infection that had spread to my kidneys and gallstones. She prescribed me antibiotics and got an appointment for treatment of gallstones and ultimately I'm feeling better. But it took three months of feeling like crap, five doctors appointments, and a crap ton of money out of my pocket to find what was wrong and get treatment when it probably should've been handled at the first doctors visit (y'know preventative care and all that) otherwise the infection wouldn't have spread. Because of this I have a harder time believing doctors give a shit. I'm sure there are many who take their job seriously but through my experience those are getting to be a rare breed. I know too many sick peoples whose first doctor appt to address the issue was the same as telling the doctor your problem, they repeat what it might be before dismissing you with no follow up or preventative measures. So yeah doctors are in the unique position of being the only ones who can effectively help you if you are sick, so I understand why people feel helpless when they seem to go out of their way to not help. God knows how many people have gotten worse (like me) due to laziness or whatever on the part of these professionals. While you should never self diagnose, ultimately you know your body well enough to know when something's wrong and it's important to vet medical and mental health professionals and hold them accountable to actually treating what is wrong. The onus unfortunately now is on the patient to hold them accountable to their profession, even though it should be their responsibility. But all of this is formed by my experience and and I'm sure there are others who had similar ordeals.
